I just called our insurance agent (State Farm) to see about raising our liability amount on our homeowners insurance. Since we have the farm animals, the house is log and we live in the country (sorta) more and more people have been deciding to visit and infringe on my right to be a secluded hermit.

I figure it's just a matter of time before some misfortune befalls a drunken friend's mongoloid child while on our property and lawyers will be circling. We were probably underinsured at $300k liability and I was SHOCKED to find that it is only $50/year to crank it to a million. That's a no brainer IMO. I thought I'd share the news in case anyone else has been considering something similar.

Thanks for the tip! I am covered by Allstate but I'm sure they too would be happy to take more money from me.

I know someone whose house just suffered serious water damage and his $75,000 coverage is not nearly enough to cover costs to replace things/repairs.

I have to reevaluate the rest of our house coverage as well but the liability was the biggest immediate concern. It'll be interesting to see if raising the other coverages is as cost effective. I doubt it.

water damage = flood, so if you have no flood insurance, you have no coverage for any water damage either

Not necessarily true. I'm covered if water pipes in the house break and flood the house but when Jesus rains tears down onto my house and the basement floods I'm fucked.

The higher your liability, the more they sue for.....most PI attorneys will only go for the insurance $

Same. If the pipes in the walls burst, I'm golden and covered by the Co-op's maintenance fees I shell out every month.

If outside the wall but still in the apartment, I and my Homeowner's insurance covers it.

If it's a hurricane or tornado, I'm SOL.

This, also its the same for autos, very cheap to increase liability coverage. Also raise your deductibles if they are low especially if you never file claims :jj: With all of the retards on the road, the majority of the drivers STILL carry just the state min. req.

Well I know from experience that lawyers will sue you personally over the insurance amount to make you liquidate your assets so I'd rather have the insurance amounts to make reaching my personal shit less likely. Lawyers are dirtbags. $50 is cheap for the added protection and with the bottom feeders out there you probably can never have enough. This was a reasonable amount to play the odds with in our situation IMO.
