Most of the time it's obvious, but any tips to see how they may have a virus or a puppy cold?

These are good. Regarding temp, both dogs and cats have a higher normal than we do, 101-103*.
Not eating is also a good barometer.
Not drinking is also a bad sign.
Gums should be pink and skin should not tent. Open the mouth, if the gums are white or very pale pink that is not good. Gently scruff them, if the flesh tent stays up, that is a second sign of dehydration.
Animals are stoic, if you're worried about your pet, take them to the vet.
some dogs have black gums
You can try but watch out for the claws
If you have a sha pei or chow, and you think it's under the weather, have it euthanized. You should also do that if it's perfectly healthy.
