They would sleep out on the porch ... ideally screened in.

I remember reading a short story about someone's memories growing up around the turn of the century. his family would spread sheets out on the lawn, watch the stars and talk into the night. Snooze there out in the open. They'd go back n the house in the early am.

I would never be able to sleep without a/c. I usually even have a fan going in my bedroom in February in New England

I recently moved into an apartment here in LA that doesn't have AC. I'm about 5 miles from the ocean, which isn't that close, but it doesn't get nearly as warm here as it does further inland.

I thought I would try to see if I could get through the summer without an AC. I just put a fan in front of the window blowing fresh air in and run a couple other fans.

It works most of the time, but when it got up in the mid 90s for a week or so, I was shopping for an AC. It was hot at night and hard to sleep. I still haven't put one in yet, but I will get one for next year. It's just kinda weird, cause you only really need it for like 5% of the time. But you still need it. Maybe if you were right by the beach, you wouldn't need it.

San Francisco, for comparison...I never had AC there, and never felt like I needed it. Berkeley either, I was pretty close to the bay.

As soon as I get in my van, the AC goes on. Windows are up and AC is on. I got the phone bluetooth going into the stereo, got my music and podcasts going in my cool, controlled environment.

When I see people driving on the freeway in the summer heat, with their windows down, or convertibles with the tops down....I don't get it. How do they relax? Doesn't that just add discomfort and stress to their life? The noise, the air pollution, the heat, the smells of the city....I guess they like it lol...

We didn't have AC when I was very young. We did have a pool and when it was very hot at night my brothers and their friends would open the johnny pump, [fire hydrant]. The water was so cold it would turn your lips blue but you would sleep like a baby.

We were without for nearly 3 weeks after Sandy. I had small kids at that time and bought a Generac $500 dollar generator for $1000 cash from a shady dude so my furnace would run and kids would be warm.

New house has 20KW standby whole house generator runs off propane tank in front yard, best thing I ever did.

My parents had air conditioning vut i moved in with my grandparents at 17

My grandfather was an old school.stubborn guinea...no AC..just thast tall rotating fan

I remember the summer of 1992 being brutally hot and muggy...trying to find d a cool spot on my sheets when i tried to go to sleep at night

Moved out and in 2004 i finally got myself an air conditioner and cable!!

I lived for years without AC and rabbit ears on my fucking television

What the hell was wrong with me?

An equally important question is, "How did/do people live without AC/DC?"

It must have been rough growing up pre-1975 and being a fan of three-chord blues based hard rock. What the fuck did they listen to besides Hawkwind and Blue Cheer?

Almost nobody has AC where I live. It's rarely anything other than 70's in summer. But man, people love when it spikes to the high 80's for that rare few days a year so that they can all talk about how they don't have AC.

It's true the shade helps a lot when I'm walking my dogs and it's real hot and sunny you can stop under a tree and instantly it'll feel a lot more comfortable

I also am glad that Nikola Tesla invented alternating current.
