My friend was in a car accident a few months back and now owes $75,535.00. He was in a head on collision that was not his fault. Spent 15 hours in a room, gave him a few scans, he had 4 broken ribs. They administered morphine for the pain, then sent him back home, with some painkillers. That was it, now he owes a shit ton of money. Sure he doesn't have medical insurance but now he is fucked financially for a very long time. Is this right?

This is why a healthcare law was passed so that no one would suffer through things like this anymore.

We have to pay for all the ones who don't. My advice to him would be to work w/the collections dept. to see if he falls into any sort of charity case, and/or declare bankruptcy.

Well now he is forced to buy health insurance at a price and service level that the governments determines. He is not free anymore to roll the dice and take a chance like he used to be. People willing to trade their freedom for temporary security deserve neither and will loseboth

If the accident was not his fault, the other driver's insurance should cover his medical bills. If the other driver did not have insurance, your friend's insurance should cover his medical bills under his uninsured motorist coverage.

If your friend did not have car or health insurance, fuck him. He deserves it.

Has Geico, the settlement is not final yet, but it's looking like he will get anywhere from 3 to 6k. So he is off to a good start =/

well at least he can still work to lower the debt. if he had obamacare the insurance company would have written off the charges since you can't collect from the dead.

Those are very high charges for a 15 hour stay. He should question the bill.

he should be talking to a lawyer about suing the other guy to pay his medical bills. if its not his fault, and they are not in a no-fault state the other guy is liable. if they are in a no-fault state his insurance is liable and will sue the other guy's insurance to recover the costs.

not necessarily that, but many of the tests would be considered unnecessary and many items would go unchecked. if, for example, he decided he wanted an MRI to rule out concussion or internal damages, he would have to cover the costs himself as the ocare would not consider it necessary if he is ambulatory (ie. walking) and not bleeding.
