Can I just slice bits of it off and eat it likened unto a carrot?

Don't boil it. Roast it with olive oil (or butter) and salt and pepper until you can pierce it with a fork... hard to say how long, since you didn't say what kind of squash.

    What kind of squash? :c

In my experience it has been served after a few too many minutes in the microwave and you lose the roof of your mouth.

Plus it needs lots of butter.
