    read the first half, interesting.

1 sentence summary of the article - When law enforcement traces a gun, a small group of agents comb through millions of pieces of paper and microfilm because the NRA won't allow the government to keep a database.

Give the gov a database of people that have tools to change the gov as a safeguard given to them by the creators of the gov. Sounds smart.

The gun people who want to protect themselves and family - I get it and agree.

The gun people who hunt - totally fine of course.

The gun people who are obsessed with "protecting themselves from the tyranny of government" - those people are bat shit crazy.

Hey it was an interesting read. Badly written, though... forced "controversial" jokes and profanity all over the place. But still, gave some insight.

I own three gun companies and work with the tracing center often. Here is the bottom line:

    1. The tracing center works hand in glove with the firearms industry. Most large distributors and manufacturers of guns have automated systems with their bound book records computerized, on a stand-alone server that ATF can access automatically 24 hours a day.

    2. Trace requests come in via fax. Email is not used because its not secure. Gun records are done by virtually all dealers on computer, excel spredsheets are what the ATF suggests as SNs can be found quicker that way. If you cant find a gun you sold, youre in deep shit. People lose their license over shit like that.

    3. The tracing center's records hold only company's records who are out of business. The rest of traces are done at the center pretty much as described.

    4. The gun industry lobbies congress, hard, for MORE money for the ATF to do its job. I have personally been involved in those efforts. The easier it is for ATF to do its job, the easier it is for the gun industry.

All that aside, the best summary of what is the biggest hindrance to tracing a gun isnt the big, bad NRA, its this quote from the head of the tracing center:

The number one reason gun traces go dry is because the cop got the gun description or the serial number wrong.

Yeah, blame the NRA for that...

I am sure the NSSF will.

Thats the Industry lobby. We have little to do with the NRA and at times are at odds with them as we have a different outlook than they do.

If you're seriously interested in American politics you'll soon learn that most media outlets lean heavily to the left. What Hugh posted isn't a closely guarded secret. In fact, it's info any serious journalist who wanted to present an objective, and informed article could have learned from a quick call to any mom n' pop gun store. Articles like that are meant solely to present a slanted, politically biased view, masquerading as an objective piece of journalism.

Yeah, it's a good thing that no government has ever turned tyrannical in the history of the world.
