I'm sharing this in the hope that others will join in and spread the joys of decorative gourd season in their towns and cities. First, I read this brilliant essay which made me laugh until I almost choked, and printed copies of it: (You can find the whole thing here: http://www.mcsweeneys.net/articles/its-decorative-gourd-season-motherfuckers ). Then I folded them up like pamphlets to cover up the bad bits: Everywhere I saw a gourd display, I popped one into it. On my way out of the grocery store where I'd left one in their outdoor display (the blurry middle picture because people were coming by), I witnessed a woman putting it back into the gourds and laughing wildly to herself. There's always the slight chance that a store camera caught me and the police will knock on my door at some point, but it was worth it. It made me happy.
