How much is enough to retire?

I'm still relatively young (37), own my own successful business, blah blah blah... no kids, no bills but the mortgage, and I often wonder how much is enough to retire these days? $1 million? $2 million? How much is enough these days?

Howard related because Howard will never have enough.

How risky do you want your investment to be and how much do you need? Most CD's and little-to-no-risk type investments are less than 2% so even having 5 million wouldnt get you 100k a year which i would think most folks here need to live on.

Substantial bills. I have expenses, but they are minimal. Mortgage is the main thing. No car payment, etc.

I could make a million last for the rest of my life.

I'll probably be dead in five years so it doesn't really matter anyways.

I hear you, I'm in metro NY. When the time comes, I think I'm either going Upstate or to a state with no income tax. I would stay out of those foreign countries, unless you like being held hostage or like the idea that the gov. may seize your money.

With my luck I will save my whole life then die without getting to enjoy it. I will have a healthy union pension but if that folds, I'm fucked.

I'm thinking of going into investment rental property as a tax shelter / retirement plan. Anyone have success going that route?

I dunno, but if I have to worry too much about buying a pricey finishing salt or a nice pair of heels, whatever I have is not enough.
