My phone now a iphone 4s I got back in 2011 when it came out. So far all is good but wanna upgrade. I called up the stores around town for the new 6s...all sold out. I don't understand who are these people who get a new phone every time a newer model comes out.

Stern related: well you know, apple. Wish I was getting paid by them to advertise.

I used to buy only used phones and loved it when I bought a new Galaxy S3 a few years back--it worked like a charm until the main board went kaput this summer and I upgraded to a Note 4. Not a fan of the S6 Edge because of the lousy ergonomics and the (same as Apple) inability to replace batteries when needed. I thought that was a boneheaded move on Samsung's part.

Anyway, I used my S3 like crazy, so a 4 year shelf-life on that thing I guess is pretty good, considering everything it went through.

Usually about once a year. But I usually get the previous years model phone or a phone that's being replaced soon. It's cheaper that way. I don't feel the need to have the newest on the day it comes out. I'll wait a year or so.

Depends on what I can get for my old one on ebay. Apple stuff really holds it's value and you can usually upgrade at almost no cost by selling your old one. Back in the 3g/3gs days I made money upgrading.

I've only gotten new phones when my contract has expired, and I could get a new phone for free when I renewed. Haven't paid for a phone in longer than I can remember.

I have a Nokia Lumia. I use a "pay as you go" system, which allows me to buy phone time without a contract. I buy $100 worth of time and I pay 40 cents per minute, which gives me around 4 hours of talk time. However, I make calls infrequently and I can stretch out the 4 hours over an entire year. It's cheaper than any price plan...

I guess I keep them till they die. Have an old Droid Charge from 2011. Hate to give it up cause I have the unlimited data plan but when I wanted to load the Uber app but couldn't cause the phones too old. Have to do something soon I guess.

I have a 5 year old flip phone but plan on getting an iPhone 6S in a few months. Also have an iPod Touch for wifi and apps. My flip phone is so stupid cheap it's hard to justify a big monthly payment.

Every two years when the contract was up. Not sure what I'll do now with the recent changes to the contracts / cost structure.

Yearly now. Thinking of changing carriers soon. Anyone know of another carrier buying out contracts?

I have an iPhone 6. Before that I had an iPhone 4 from 2010. That long of a wait was a bit unusual. I kept waiting for breakthrough products. One is I wanted Apple to make a bigger screen. The 5 wasn't good enough. The other is that I fell in love with Windows 8 Mobile and I was waiting for a really good flagship phone to come out. Whichever came first, that's the one I was going to go with. That's how I got the iPhone 6. I won't be getting another phone probably until the iPhone 8.

I'm keeping my 5s until it dies because I don't like the idea of a bigger phone.
