Interesting hypothetical last week on Mike & Mike's ESPN sports talk show.

If you were handed a basketball and given 10 half court shot attempts to make one for $20million, knowing that if you failed, you would instead receive a 2 year prison sentence (white collar prison, easy time with conjugal visits), would you go for it? It would be a 47 foot shot. For the women, let's take off 10 feet for a 37 ft shot....

FWIW both Mikes tried it and the metrosexual heaved the ball baseball style and made it on his first attempt while the sports Mike failed the first 9 times but put it through the hoop on his final chance. I'd be inclined to give it a shot (pardon the pun)

Would you risk 2 years in prison for a chance to win $20million (net, taxes prepaid) ???

You should read Stephen King's 'The Running Man' (the Schwarzenegger movie sucked and was COMPLETELY different from the book). The novel's much darker than the film and deals with similar themes. In the book the character is not confined to 400 city blocks like the movie but instead is declared an enemy of the state and can go anywhere in the world. If he survives 30 days he gets $1 Billion, but the catch is he's being hunted and the alternative is being killed. There's also other games like taking people with heart conditions and putting them on treadmills and increasing the rapidly increasing the speed, and the longer they stay on the more money they make, or they sometimes drop dead.

No because the odds of hitting a half court shot on ten attempts is still very low. According to what I have read, they estimate that one in 50 of those half court halftime attempts are actually made. So if you make 10 attempts, you have about a 2% chance to make the basket. Better odds than playing Powerball, but all you lose if lose Powerball is $2. You lose this hypothetical scenario because you have a 98% chance of going to prison. No thanks.

It cost us 400.00 to insure a 15,000.00 half court shot. That's a lot more than to insure a hole in one on a par three, which is an indicator that it isn't all that rare that people hit those shots.

For twenty million, I would have to consider it. Two main factors would play into my decision: 1. How many times could I make that shot in a practice scenario? 2. Would this white collar prison have any inmates who would be capable of doing damage to my butthole?

If the answer to #2 is yes, perhaps, or possibly... I'm going to pass.

I would definitely go for it. Even if I had no practice shots before. It would take a few shots to gauge things correctly. Back in HS, before basketball practice, we would always fuck around shooting shots from all over the court. Half-court straight on would be the easiest 'tough' shot to make.

One caveat, if the penalty for missing the shots is 2 years in anything but a country club jail, i'm not doing it. No way i'm risking 2 years in a max prison.

With $20 million you can get better than that. Pass. I'll take the $20 million and get my own bimbo.
