District addresses Oakland school officer attack on student in wheelchair

OAKLAND, Calif. — The Oakland Unified School District on Thursday said it has fired an Oakland High School resource officer who is also facing a felony charge after he slapped and dumped a student out of his wheelchair.

"We am apologizing to the family of the victim," said Oakland Unified School District spokesman Troy Flint.
Flint said on May 19th at 9 a.m., two school officers were urging students running late to get to their classrooms. He said some of the students including one in a wheelchair, a teen named Francisco Martinez, continued to linger in the hallway.

After more failed attempts, Flint said school officer Marchell Mitchell grabbed the handles of the wheelchair and began to push Martinez toward class. Flint said Martinez objected and began to slap the officer's hands.

Flint said the officer responded by handcuffing Martinez and then attacking him.
"He then responded in an extremely emotional manner, basically by snapping and punching the student several times and dumping him out of his wheelchair and onto the floor," explained Flint.

People rallied behind Martinez at the Oakland Unified School District board meeting on Tuesday night, telling the board what happen to Martinez was a crime and demanding the second school officer also be fired.

Flint said Mitchell, who was hired as a substitute school officer in November, was immediately fired and arrested by Oakland Police.

The Alameda County District Attorney's office charged Mitchell with corporal injury to a child or child abuse. His pre-trial hearing is scheduled for June 16.
The school district said it did a background check on Mitchell when he was hired. It says it showed no prior arrests or convictions. District spokesman Troy Flint says the school district will re-evaluate its officer training.

This poster (from around 1938) reads: "60,000 Reichsmark is what this person suffering from a hereditary defect costs the People's community during his lifetime. Fellow citizen, that is your money too. Read '[A] New People', the monthly magazine of the Bureau for Race Politics of the NSDAP."
