When you announce your retirement, and stock prices jump UP.

BloombergSteve Ballmer, chief executive officer of Microsoft Corp., delivers the keynote during the Microsoft Build Developers Conference in San Francisco, Calif. on June 26, 2013.

He added that while his "original thoughts on timing would have had my retirement happen in the middle of our company's transformation to a devices and services company," Microsoft needs a CEO who will be here longer term for the new direction.
The company's board has appointed a special committee—members of whom include Chairman Bill Gates—to find a new CEO, and will consider both external and internal candidates.
Microsoft, although vastly profitable, has been stymied in its efforts to adapt to a range of new computing platforms and approaches.

Mr. Ballmer last month announced a sweeping reorganization of the company, which is aimed partly at increasing the company's momentum in tablets and smartphones.

Mr. Ballmer has led several Microsoft divisions during the past 32 years, including operations, operating systems development, and sales and support. In July 1998, he was promoted to president, a role that gave him day-to-day responsibility for running Microsoft. He was named Microsoft's CEO in January 2000.

Under Mr. Ballmer, Microsoft has endured years of investor criticism as the rise of mobile devices and Internet services eroded the influence of the personal computer-era kingpin. The company has responded to the pressures in a variety of ways already, including taking the radical move of developing and selling its own tablet-style computer in competition with longtime partners.
In July, Microsoft reported that it took a $900 million charge on its high-profile Surface RT tablet, contributing to fourth-quarter results that sharply missed revenue and profit expectations.

He really is the worst. Win 8, those crappy Surface tabs, etc...

The Xbox is the best thing he helped drive and even that had a shitty start and BILLIONS written off due to the red ring of death (I had 4 of them die!).

I worked for MS for a few years...the arrogant ignorance at the top reminded me of the "groupthink" and "don't tell the emperor about his clothes" crap that we see in the Howig bubble. This is a good thing and they should get out of non-profit producing markets, focus on the core good shit they sell.

I make my living through Microsoft, so I'm glad the company will be going in a different (and hopefully better) direction.

I've heard that as well. A guy I used to work with said that Ballmer is as big of a spaz IRL as he is in front of groups and in commercials.

Yeah, it was. And what was even funnier is that I did a "YEAH, I fucking TOTALLY edited that before someone caught it". Only thing that would have made it douchier would have been a fist-pump.

You a .net code jockey? Office it the de-facto...they need to stop fucking with it and goofing around with the UI...assanine "lets change simple shit around" like hide the "cut and paste" and "un-do" so people get so fed up they just switch or stay on the 2007 platform. Drove me insane. Also, the Lync and unified communications platform is strong, better/easier than Webex but gets shellacked by Cisco.

Anyway, fuck you Gay Howard. Hi Fred!

I was at the deal where he pretended to smash the guy's iphone. Truth is, I carried one too, like 40-50% of the company used them...shitty windows phone I had to cary on sales calls, but I still had iphone in pocket.

It is a lot better now, but 3-4 years ago it was a brick.

I'm glad to see Ballmer go, but there's no good news here. Win8 is the result of them trying to do this. They just announced that they intend to double down. Obviously haven't learned a damned thing from the reaction Win8 got. I hope the new guy radically shifts the direction back to improving the operating system rather than forcing their tablet marketing ploy down our throats.
