America's Got Talent Night 1 will battle Dancing with the Stars and The Bachelorette.

America's Got Talent Night 2 will battle American Idol and Glee.

    It's not about DVRing.

    It's about ratings.

And the most buzzed-about ratings measure is the overnight ratings, which *DON'T* take into account DVR use. (DVR ratings takes more than a week to process.)

So Howard is going to debut on May 14 and May 15 going up against many established hit shows -- I didn't mention Two and a Half Men -- that are airing their final episodes.

So basically Howard is walking into a buzzsaw.

Because the chances of the overnight ratings being great the day after May 14 and May 15 are very slim.

True. But I couldn't care less. Maybe some cable channel will play jungle to jungle

    I'm talking about the headlines.

The media is going to fixate (unfairly) on Howard's 1st week overnight numbers because that's all they care about.

And Howard's 1st week looks daunting.

When he signed up to do AGT, he was thinking he would be facing crappy summer programming, not the best of the best of the best TV has to offer.

It usually debuts at the end of May or early June, after May sweeps are over.

This year, because of the Howard Stern factor, they're starting it early on May 14.

The last day of May sweeps is May 23, so Howard's first four shows will be under intense competition, then he goes up against summer garbage.

They can figure in how many people DVR shows and watch them(along with OnDemand) so it doesn't really matter as much as it used to if someone watched a show live or DVR'd. Although you can fast forward through the commercials on a DVR and isn't that what the advertisers don't want? On Comcast cable now if you watch a tv show On Demand you can't fast forward through the commercials anymore.

I think the AI people are not worried too much about Howard being on AGT and are probably betting that he will suck as a judge.

The NBA playoffs will be in full swings at that point, Idol is losing viewers every week and without one compelling singer in the competition I don't see them torching up the ratings

Nielsen does measure DVR usage, but it takes a week.

My point is that overnight viewers are the most valuable.

Overnights are what the media fixate on.

Overnights are what the advertisers care about (if you're watching live, you're not fast-forwarding through the ads).

It's the overnight ratings that grab the headlines.

Thus it's the overnight ratings that could make a show look good or shitty.

So if Howard kicks off with terrible AGT ratings, even if he has many DVR viewers (as released a week later) it won't matter because the headlines would already declare Howard a failure in his first week.

(In my best Johnny Carson Voice)"I did not know that!"
I think AGT will start off gangbusters with everyone "wanting to see what he'll say next" but then the honeymoon will be over and the show is going to tank. At least I can hope this is the case. I want to hear how Hop along Howie explains that away.

Seems like this will give Howard cover in case of a week 2 ratings loss - "Robin, of course the finale of Idol gets good ratings. We would have crushed them in any other week."

Yup, every day before noon ET, the NY Times, Washington Post, Daily Variety, Deadline Hollywood, The Wrap, The hollywood Reporter, LA Times and many other publications publish stories on last night's ratings.

Here's today's report on last night's ratings -- Trump had his worst ratings last night.
    http://www.deadline.com/2012/03/ratings-rat-race-bobs-burgers-rises-gcb-celebrity-apprentice-drop/

But when DVR stats come in, they are rarely reported, or only reported at hardcare ratings websites, because it's already old news. (DVR ratings take into account if you watched the episode in the week after it aired, which is why it takes a week to measure.)

That's why overnight ratings are so important.

this makes me very happy....how will howard spin this (or will he threaten to ruin DWTS and AI).
don't think there aren't behind the scenes machinations to try to change all this.
howard does not like to be disrespected and will act like the vindictive, drama queen he really is.
