I was searching for a Stern clip and came across the unaired Fox Pilot for the Stern show. I never knew this even existed.

I'm sure many of you knew about this, but I didn't - so I'm passing on.

I'm guess this was before the Channel 9 show - many of the same elements.

But this is compelling stuff - very 80's - but Alison is there as is Dee Snyder (and his hot wife). It's actually pretty funny at times.

I recommend any old/new fans watch this - maybe download it - I suspect it's going to "disappear".

Below is episode 5, part 1 - Posting this because of the irony of having Alison in "court". I'll be watching the rest over the weekend.

Wow, those dancers at the beginning were terrible.

Stern and Schneider's wives -- it only takes one glance to tell this was recorded in the 80s.

Threads showing the entire show pops up on this site every six months or so.

I have to admit, I don't think episode 5 has ever been posted though.

I always find it funny that Howard keeps everything but claims that this pilot is lost and he cannot find a copy anywhere. It is obvious that if his fans ever saw it, they wouldn't buy his bullshit excuse that Fox pulled the plug because Rupert Murdoch was pissed off at Howard for saying something on the air on his radio show. They would know the truth that it axed because the show was God awful.

This was trash. And Howie knew it. I mean, you're gonna put Leslie West up on stage by himself? All the other shows had BANDS. Regardless of the fact that the show wasn't picked up yet and this was only a pilot, he could have put out a big of change for a band and made this thing look a little better than all the shows Kelly Bundy hosted on "Married...With Children". At least those were executed SOMEWHAT properly.

Who on Earth would have said this was great even in 1987?

I think that's because, like me, most people probably never made it past episode 3.

    It's garbage.

My opinion is that Howard was brilliant on the radio up until 7 or 8 years ago. The fact that he thinks or has ever thought that he could do a watchable, successful tv show is ridiculous. This was in his heyday and it was fucking horrible. I lasted 5 minutes before bailing

Wow... Did Howard use $17.85 for production and pocket the rest of the budget??? Jesus this is awful even on the 1980's Fox Network.

The Channel 9 shows were good. Probably overrated just because they were so different and edgy at the time, but still pretty good.

But I think Howard is better suited for radio. On TV you need a more rigid structure and when Howard was great, the show had an organic nature where something insignificant could turn into a 20 minute bit because of how something could spark. You cannot do that on TV.

The production value sucks, but so did the Channel 9 shows. But they made those shows work somehow. The Fox pilots were just bad TV. Even if he was given an unlimited budget, that wouldn't change.

Howard never really gave decent effort to his CBS and Fox projects. The Channel 9 thing was a local show, and Channel 9 had an anything-goes culture. They also created Morton Downey Jr.

I'm unsure why Howard seemed to sabotage the two shots he had at the big time on TV. Maybe he knew the radio show was his bread and butter and he just couldn't stretch himself.

Was it lack of effort or lack of ability?

Howard was never really good on TV- his talk show appearances usually sucked, the channel 9 show was entertaining in spots but unproferssional, even the E show wasn't great.

Radio was his wheelhouse (key word "was")

Yeah, his acting in "Private Parts" wasn't very good, either. Well, he tried. It was a life.

How is that any different than the radio show over the last decade?

I always though a big part of the charm of the channel 9 show was that it looked thrown together - like it was put together in someone's basement - Stern was opening himself up to his audience enough to let us see the warts. It was like he was making the viewers/fans part of the show - no fourth wall. I always appreciated that.

Other shows in the 80's were of similarly low production value - e.g SCTV.

Also - when Fox started it was a fledgling "4th network". No one thought it was going to survive.

The fact that Stern taped (at least ) 5 episodes - means this was more that a pilot.

It appears this show was a predessesor to the the Channel 9 show. And it's not that bad compared to that (funny) mess.

It's fun to recall how radical Stern once was - pre-Marci.

And it's fun to see Leslie West with legs too.

up until the last 10 to 15 years, she fit with the radio show. She never had a place on the TV projects.

One thing she always had a place for on both radio and TV up until he sold out and went PC was to allow Howard to say and do racist things because he had a black co-host.

I will give Howard credit for at least trying not to do a standard late night talk show. But he loses massive points for doing a lame People's Court rip off show that was not funny or imaginative. I mean you could have seen a case like that on the actual People's Court in the 80s.
