Howard's audience at that time was 15-17 million concentrated in major cities with easy access to theaters. I'm guessing the producers thought that the large majority of that audience would go see the film and they would bring non fans with them so maybe 20 million viewers minimum were projected x $6/ticket for a gross of $120 million. The fact that the true gross was 1/3 of that ended Howard's movie career.

    Exactly.
In reality, a lot of (most?) of his fans were like me and wouldn't be caught dead going to a Howard Stern movie.
Even back then I would be too embarrassed to admit I listen to the show. It was a pretty stupid/lowbrow show and I don't think I knew
more than 1 person who listened.
Now is a whole different and even more disgraceful thing...:(

Always it comes back to that 20 million number. 20 million movie viewers, 20 million Sirius listeners...

It wasn't a bad movie. More like a Comedy Central-type deal, really. But (to quote Billy Corgan) it wasn't Citizen Kane either. On top of that, it was really the beginning of the cloak coming off of Oz. The whole movie's premise is that the great famous rich "shock jock" is really a family man with simple problems like everyone else. Instead, he was in the midst of a divorce, the true details of which we will never know. Howard turned out to be a fucking liar who spent 1992-1997 with Team Buchwald working on that "made for TV" movie and polishing his image for "mainstream" access. The end result was not so much a promising movie career as a transition to old pathetic divorcee who helps head the equivalent of a high school talent show, complete with a creepy, passive-aggressive "trophy" wife as his perennial side-kick.
