So when exactly was the "clapping era"? You know, when the gang "clapped" after every funny bit or celebrity discussion?

    I'm guessing about '87-'92.

When a caller complained to Howard about the clapping during all the shows in The History of Howard Stern Act II, Howard claimed management made him do that.

They clapped a lot on NBC. Howard's explanation was that he was so stressed out by the management that he thought they needed to do something to break up the silence...

I remember that. Howard also claimed it was to fill dead space on air. It was before Fred got the idea to do drops

Here's footage of Howard and the gang clapping after Howard says Michael Jackson had bones shoved in his nose to make himself look more like a white man.

I can tell by Howard's nervous smile that management is just off camera with their fists balled up, threatening to get physical with him if he doesn't clap at his every attempt at a joke.

Yeah, it was his earlier years, when it was more like a morning zoo.

Anyone remember the years when they all repeated some phrases in a weird voice? Like when a girl said she was wearing a "mini-dress" all of the guys would yell out "MINI-DRESS" in a high pitched voice.

I think they stopped doing that when Billy West left.

What's worse? Clapping after a crappy joke, or Howard yelling out "YEAH YEAH YEAH" during any musical performance. I can't find a clip online, but the worst was when Bryan Adams came in to sing some gay songs, and the entire time Howard was yelling out YEAH like they were rocking. UGH.

I bet Stern used to mentally count out his claps, to soothe his OCD.

I think that clapping shit went on well after 1992 and quite possibly into 1995. It wasn't as often, but you listen...they were still doing it.

Honestly, I thought it was kinda funny. I think it kinda let us even further in on what they were up to. I don't know. I was in high school in the early/mid 90s and I noticed that me and my friends (because of my knowledge of the show at the time) were doing this too. It was a goof that we were so lame just sitting around busting balls and clapping at ourselves for good form.

I think they clapped more at unfunny stuff than funny stuff.

I started listening about 92, clapping was done sparingly, when they played old shows it was annoying.

The clapping was very funny when they did it at the right time. During some news stories it le t cracked me up.
