One of NASA’s crowning glories, the Hubble Space Telescope, marks its 25th anniversary this week.

With 1 million-plus observations, including those of some of the farthest and oldest galaxies ever glimpsed by humanity, no man-made satellite has touched as many minds or hearts as Hubble.

NASA is celebrating Friday’s anniversary with ceremonies this week at the Smithsonian Institution and Newseum in Washington...............

Remembering that it all started badly with a mirror that was out of spec and needed a never-anticipated before repair...awesome engineering & science yielding some inspiring pictures of nature's art, too. Love the "stellar nursery" shot below - new stars being "born." Truly "American ingenuity" at its best. Keep an eye out for the new James Webb telescope launching in 2018 - even more incredible things to come.

I watched an excellent PBS special on the Hubble last night. You say, PBS? Yes, you will enjoy it. Check it out if you can.

They took a piece of the night sky roughly the size of a straw held out at arm's length. The Hubble found 10,000 GALAXIES in a piece of the sky which would fit inside a straw.

    10,000 galaxies, not stars.

And that's only the beginning. Hubble can see "back in time" to the latest of the earliest galaxies. The Webb will see back to the first stars.

The show I watched has the Hubble falling back to Earth in 20 years or so. Bummer.

Depends on why you want to know.

Clarification: I am not a DS member who works for or is a contractor for NASA.

I was just wondering if there were any fellow posters that work in the biz...I work at the Goddard Space Flight Center outside of DC.

I have a decades long argument / discussion ongoing with a family member regarding the fact that a lot of stars, planets, galaxies that we see in the night sky are from celestial bodies that no longer exist as they did when the light / energy we are seeing today was generated.

I get the crooked head puppy dog look and hear "how can we see something that doesn't exist".
I try my best to explain, 186K miles per second, time, space, etc.

We usually end up screaming about Santa, The Easter Bunny, Jesus, creation, 6000 year old earth and such.

    That sounds brutal, @Bristol Chicken.

Here's an embarrassing tidbit from my past, before I took an Astronomy class in college I thought the Earth and the moon were the same size.
