Mamadou Diallo, 61, got a frantic call on his cellphone from his 51-year-old wife as he stood outside their Claremont Village home just after 9 p.m. Monday, officials said. She told him she had just broken free from a man who had barged into their apartment, hit her in the face, ripped off her clothes and would have raped her had she not broken free. Diallo sprinted into the building and caught her attacker, identified as Earl Nash, 43, of Morrisania, in the sixth floor hallway and pummeled him unconscious, police said.
