I have a stupid fucking question about SNL

I never watch SNL...not on principle, but because I'm usually doing other shit and I don't have a DVR. So I sit down tonight and watch 3 shows from earlier this year (on Netflix) and noted that in each of the episodes, at least one skit was heavily centered around a brand, and the brand's logo and name was used extensively. One skit featured M&Ms (Zach Galifanakis), one Target (Kristin Wiig), and the other Hermes bags (Ben Afflek). I remember seeing similar Target skits on episodes from previous years when Wiig was still a cast member, but watching 3 episodes back to back, and seeing all those brands really made me realize that SNL must be selling product placement in skits with the host of the show. Am I crazy or is this a known thing?

Justification for posting this in the Stern forum--Stern used to rag on SNL; also he seems to do the sleazy shit I think they're doing.

No, SNL doesn't do product placement. (I'm a massive SNL expert.)

The Target Lady was a recurring sketch that Wiig did for years. Now that she's gone, it's gone.

The Hermes sketch was about porn stars promoting Hermes. Why would Hermes pay for that?

    I don't even remember the M&M thing.

But SNL is going to mention real-world brands. What else are they going to say?

When Darrell Hammond was on the cast, they'd do a Hardball with Chris Matthews sketch all the time.

Since he left in 2009, Matthews has been totally absent.

It depends really on the cast member. They'll create something based on a real-world thing, but they are not product placed.

It happens all over TV and will only get worse now that more and more people rely on DVR or watch shows online.

I'm not arguing with you, but it really is striking when you see it all back to back like that. I know they did Target sketches in the past...but that doesn't negate the possibility that it is product placement. And the Hermes bag thing...you're right, it was about porn actresses--but still, the name and logo was flashed repeatedly. The M&M sketch was probably the funniest....it took place in an M&M store(?!?) with Zach dressed in an M&M outfit apologizing for racist/homophobic comments to his co-workers. A skit like that could literally have taken place anywhere...in a made-up restaurant, a construction site, an office...why the fuck would they set it in an M&M store and have Zach dress as a giant M&M? On most network shows they won't even show the brand of soda or water that people are drinking out of on camera.

I'll watch a couple more 2013 episodes on Netflix tomorrow and see if I notice any more. It just struck me as odd...3 chronologically aired episodes, each episode had at least one sketch with the host where the entire bit was centered around a product or brand with heavy use of the logo.

Link to older Target skit (can't find the newest one online)

A lot of network shows do do product placement...

But for a show like SNL, it would seem to be really hard to do.

They start out with 80 sketches on Monday, maybe many more.

Then they narrow them down throughout the week....they'll even cut sketches betwen dress rehearsal at 8:30 and the live show at 11:30.

Between all that, it would seem to be really hard to lock up a product placement deal on a sketch, when you don't know what sketch you're running.

And I seriously doubt Lorne Michaels would choose a sketch based on product placement over something that's funnier.

As for using the names of real brands, why not?

It simply sounds unrealistic when you use a fake brand name.

Why use Target? Because it's more relatable than some fake big store name.

Other than the Target sketch, the other brands just seem crowbarred in to me. I just googled "SNL product placement" and see that other people have noticed it and been complaining. Still not sure it's a real thing, but if I watch two more episodes and each one has a blatant product in a sketch, I'm calling foul. Not saying that the sketches aren't funny...but sure seems fucked up if a show like SNL is doing it.

Jeff Probst of Survivor just came out and said it. There are going to be more product placements to help us pay for the show (and our huge homes). It's not too obtrusive so I don't care. But done in a serious movie and it can snap you right out of the suspension of disbelief so you realize again you're watching something written and produced for a profit.

Have you seen the latest Die Hard movie? It was a complete piece of shit. Just awful in every way. But there was this retarded 20+ minute car chase in Moscow that was nothing more than a Mercedes Benz ad. It was relentless. I don't think there was 45 seconds with the Mercedes emblem in the center of the screen.

I don't mind product placement, but when they bash the audience over the head with it, I just tune out. Sadly though, there are people out there who are two dumb to see it even when it's as blatant as it could possibly be.

If only they could go back to the days of only having to shoehorn in Irwin Mainway's products.

Wasnt much different 20 years ago. Sandler, Spade and Farley would play those airhead girls who worked at the Gap. George Wendt did the sketches about "Da Bears" superfans. A lot of sketches in writers minds start with "that'd be funny if someone went into a....." and they name a real brand.

wow those Days of Our Lives product placements are very obvious (as natural as Howard's)! Can somebody post some more like that from other TV shows?

re: the porn stars & Hermes... The premise is that they always make a fake commercial for different luxury goods, trying to get free stuff like champagne, etc.

I think it is deplorable for anyone to sell sponsorship or product placement for their content. I don't know how anyone could sell out like that.

Brilliant. Getting America to associate Subway with those fat fucks from Pawn Stars! They also did ads for Stacker 2 Energy Shots. Because when I think energy, I think of Chum Lee and the Harrison family. :coffee:

The people who thought of the Subway placement, the people who signed off on it, the crew who shot it and didn't speak up, and the douchey actors should ALL be executed.

    Literally executed.
