They come from northern Brazil and Uruguay. They are prized for their velvety black exterior and docile nature. This is what they will look like when they grow up:

Being "New World" Tarantulas (North, Central and South Americas), they are generally docile. Unlike "Old World" Tarantulas (Africa, Asia, Australia), they evolved "urticating hairs" on their abdomens which they flick off with their legs when distressed. (see video below) Think of little clouds of fiberglass fibers. They can cause irritating rashes on your skin and can really fuck you up if they get in your eyes or nasal passages.

Old world tarantulas do not have these hairs and are much more defensive/aggressive and their venom is much more potent. No human has ever been on record as having been killed by tarantula venom but old world venom will fuck you up bad. In addition to intense pain you can experience cramping, vomiting, nausea, and heart palpitations.

Even without the symptoms of venom, some old or new world tarantulas get so large that their fangs can cause significant physical damage.

Now I'll post some pictures of my babies.

    Nice.

Summer evening drives around here are fun because of all the tarantulas crossing the road. Never saw so many until we moved to the greenbelt. Love watching them walk.

Here are their enclosures awaiting their arrival. I bought a bunch of these from the Container Store and the lady ringing me up asked me what I was going to use them for. She took it pretty well when I told her.

I labelled them with their species names and A, B and C since I won't be able to sex them til they're much larger. The substrate is a mixture of ground up coconut fiber and vermiculite.

You think a spider is a reptile? You're almost as retarded as the op with collecting arachnids as pets...

Here's your new home. One was very lively and skittered right into his enclosure. Another had to be prodded. The third is still groggy from the trip and is still on the tissue and gentle prodding isn't getting him to move yet. I'll let him chill for a while.

Hah, they're so small! Never saw one that size, or if I did, I probably thought it was a regular spider.
