They come from northern Brazil and Uruguay. They are prized for their velvety black exterior and docile nature. This is what they will look like when they grow up: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grammostola_pulchra Being "New World" Tarantulas (North, Central and South Americas), they are generally docile. Unlike "Old World" Tarantulas (Africa, Asia, Australia), they evolved "urticating hairs" on their abdomens which they flick off with their legs when distressed. (see video below) Think of little clouds of fiberglass fibers. They can cause irritating rashes on your skin and can really fuck you up if they get in your eyes or nasal passages. Old world tarantulas do not have these hairs and are much more defensive/aggressive and their venom is much more potent. No human has ever been on record as having been killed by tarantula venom but old world venom will fuck you up bad. In addition to intense pain you can experience cramping, vomiting, nausea, and heart palpitations. Even without the symptoms of venom, some old or new world tarantulas get so large that their fangs can cause significant physical damage. Now I'll post some pictures of my babies.
