ain't nothing like necrophiliac serial killers.

I hope James Franco doesn't fuck up the film adaptation.

Overarching themes of the novel are cruelty, isolation, and moral degradation of human beings and the role of fate and society in it. One of the novel's main themes is sexual deviancy, specifically necrophilia. Ballard, who the novel makes clear is unable to have conventional romantic relationships, eventually descends into necrophilia after finding a dead couple in a car. After this "first love" is destroyed in a fire, he becomes proactive, creating dead female partners by shooting them with his rifle. Ballard also makes no distinction between women and girls, at one point killing a girl whom he had previously asked "How come you wear them britches? You cain't see nothin". Another theme examined by the novel is survival. As the real world pushes Ballard further and further into a corner, he degenerates into an almost barbaric survivalist, living rough, stealing food, and deviously escaping after he is captured by a group of vengeful men.

Though the novel received critical praise, it was not a financial success. Like its predecessor, Outer Dark, Child of God established McCarthy's interest in using extreme isolation, perversity, and violence to represent normal human experience. :coffee:

I downloaded the free sample on my kindle and read a bit. Maybe I'll buy it when I'm done with the other two books I'm reading.

Oh, I feel it is so wonderfully written. I love dispensing quotation marks and sentence structure, and the dialect in order to get to the heart of the story. The sinking into depravity of Lester Ballard is believable, which starts with his rape accusation, to ogling a young teen with her mongoloid child, and then Zodiac Killer-style murders, and then he sleeps with and has sex with these corpses. He wears their clothes and dons makeup whilst living a fringe existence in these old caves. I am very curious how this will be adapted to film without selling out by toning it down.

It is also a fast read, I never experienced a book go by so quickly.

I also used an old-fashioned book, not a faggit Kindle.

    peace

Okay. You can summarize why you think this? I don't dispute your opinion, just interested in other point-of-views.

Keep in mind, also, it is one of his earlier books.
