I love these, they appeal to my sense of moral superiority

Just yesterday I showed up late to a class. Its in a small and cramped room. Everyone was ready to give me the stink eye, but then they saw what was pinned to my chest.

How dare any of these plebs say something to me, especially when they don't wear their poppy in a course of war and remembering. They all self-shamed and viewed me as the moral hero that the class deserves.

In Canada, November 11 is Remembrance Day, a day to mourn and remember the soldiers who died fighting for the country.
An iconic poem, In Flanders Fields, is associated with the day, and recited in schools throughout the nation, its even on our currency. The poppy represents a symbol of remembrance.

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
    In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
    In Flanders fields.

Canadians are told it from a very young age. It's part of the culture; I'd be surprised if any Canadian didn't know what a poppy was for.

When I was a kid I remember the old VFW dudes selling little plastic poppies periodically, but I never really thought much about it....

as a little kid in ontario, we used to climb up onto cenotaphs and jump off. roll down the little hills etc. i saw all the names but didn't really know what it was. as i got older i realized that something like 30 local guys died in the war. this was a small town rural area. mowed down like weeds.

i'm sure some of the older folks thought we were little assholes but nobody said anything.

lesson: don't play on cenotaphs! :grouch:

My mom wears the poppy. She's a Vietnam vet, same as my dad. She served in the WAC (Women's Army Corps, now disbanded). She's a proud vet!! :)
