Anybody here know about this? I had an openvpn server setup on my old router with ddns and it worked great. Generated my own certs and keys and the whole deal. The router got fried and I picked up new one and I'm thinking of switching to PPTP because its native to all the devices people in my house use. My keschin is. I know PPTP is not secure and can be sniffed. I don't really give a fuck about that cause anything can be sniffed these days. What I am concerned with is someone being able to probe my ports and see that VPN port open and login. Is that possible? Is the PPTP server secure as far as that goes? Please don't tell me to jpeg it.

PPTP will serve you just fine.....do you have an IPSEC option?

I thought you loved getting your ports probed? And sniffed?

Not sure. I'll need to check. I load shibby tomato on my routers and it looked like they pulled a lot of the VPN server options.

DBD, PPTP will NOT serve you well IMHO. The fact of the matter is that there are several user friendly (as in with a GUI) utilities for GNU/Linux that any script kiddie can download and hard break that encryption with in under a day. Here's a detailed explanation: http://www.thefreelibrary.com/New tools can crack PPTP encryption in under a day.-a0298020307
As to what they could do, the main thing is torrent. Just go to Torrent Freak http://torrentfreak.com/ and read up on the movies being sued over these days. The porn films in particular are bad about this; do you really want to be on the bad end of a $300,000 lawsuit that can be settled for maybe $10k because you were too lazy to use OpenVPN? This article sums it up fairly well: https://www.techdirt.com/articles/2...behind-malibu-medias-copyright-trollery.shtml The blogs dietrolldie.com and fightcopyrighttrolls.com also do a good job covering that aspect of copyright trolling. If you want my advice, set up your own router running FreeBSD or OpenBSD with OpenVPN. Here is a good guide for OpenBSD: http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=...jA_0G_0DUBsbkkJkqMc44wA&bvm=bv.77161500,d.aWw

So the authentication of PPTP is fucked too? That's not what I want to hear. I am not using this VPN for anything weird so I don't care about traffic sniffing like I said. Its mainly for all our mobile devices so we can bypass any kind of traffic shaping being done by our provider or WiFi hotspots we may jump on. Openvpn is money and I've used it before but its not native to our devices and my woman and kids will never run the client like I tell them to. Fuck. Fuckfuckfuck

This, IPSEC provides the security you are looking for. also, if you use pptp just always use HTTPS then you will have no worries. If a website doesn't provide HTTPS where you provide sensitive info avoid, do this even with IPSEC.

Oh, if he is using for this then it is an entirely different matter. I thought he was using it to manage and access his home network while away. Yeah, i would suggest also not to do this for that. Use another service.

No, you are right. Strictly a tunnel from my phones to my home network. Either on cellular data or public WiFi.

DBD, all that encryption does nothing for you since you are using your real IP. Everyone in the world knows what you are connected to, they might not can read what you are reading but they know what servers you are connected to and can put two and two together. you need to start over bro.

Oh, then PPTP is more than fine, just use HTTPS for everything. May i suggest?
