My 10 yr old had to read a paragraph about Spanish for his online homework. At the end he had to give the best solution to the communication problem between Americans and immigrants who do not speak English.

The correct answer was not that the immigrant should learn English, no the correct answer was that the American needs to learn Spanish.

Is this indoctrinating children into a bizarre liberal way of thinking? Or am I overreacting?

I agree. You should bring this up at a PTA meeting. They will probably scoff at you and call you a racist though. My daughter flunked Spanish, and I told her it was OK.
Although it would be interesting to learn another language, it should not be required of our children.

Can you post the actual question, so I may get suitably incensed?

You're overreacting. Our kids need to learn to speak a second language. Nothing wrong with being able to communicate with people arriving from a different country.

I'm a pretty easy going guy but it's a new world today and it frustrates me in a way. Here's why......

If you want to put God on something or pray in a school...that's a huge no no. BUT if a middle eastern child wants to bow to Mecca and pray, he's allowed out of fear of backlash? Why the heck is that?? In all seriousness, I don't get it. Who knows. It's a crazy PC world today. I just kind of shake my head in disbelief, then laugh and move on.:dontknow:

My son asked me for help because he clicked on the answer that immigrants should learn English, when that was wrong he didn't know what to choose and that program does not allow you to move on to the next question until you click the right answer.

So at least he has common sense.

Spanish was the first European language spoken on this continent.
Mexicans are not Spaniards for the most part but native Americans.
i think Spanish should be thaught in schools as a second language and an increasingly more common language. And it should be mandatory for non English speaking kids to learn English in our schools.

You are not overreacting! I would be pissed and probably write a note on the homework. Taking a second language is pretty much a given nowadays. Learn to speak fucking English if you want to live-work-go to school-in America!!

There are over 6,900 languages in the world, heck the bible has been translated into over 2500 languages. From your perspective, why would a kid only learn a second language? Should a kid have to learn Mandarin, Russian, Punjabi, Japanese etc etc etc??

Its an online homework program called Study Island, I could write a note. Thats why I'm asking this because I am thinking of talking to someone at the school about it.

You know during the great European surge of immigration of its "tired and poor," foreign language speakers were shit out out of luck unless they learned English. There were no outreach programs to help them assimilate nor required official documents in their native languages. It was do or die on the basis of their own industry and initiative. Yet they persevered and often thrived. It built character and fostered unity. Now if you go into a California DMV to take the written test, even those stupid primers informing how far from a hydrant or intersection you can park, are available in I believe 6 languages. I know people who have been here over 20 years and still don't speak more than the most rudimentary English because they've never been compelled to. And it's only gonna get more fragmented as we bend over backwards to accommodate immigrants instead of requiring more proactive acculturation. Fucking ponderous.
