Imus is less of a Douche in the long run it seems than Stern is . . .
2.2 million listeners trump Howard's dwindling subscriber base!
Doesn't Imus have prostate cancer or something?
2.2 million listen too Imus? Is this real or the inflated numbers like Howard uses?
I actually heard Imus today for about 5 minutes in a customers car. He was promoting some charity made payable to his ranch. Tried selling it as a tax write off before the end of the year.,
I have to say, I listened to Imus a lot over the years working construction (the old timers chose the station on the boom box) and he's nowhere near as bad as Stern makes him out to be. In the early to mid 2000s I actually think he did a better show than Howard (the Sid Rosenberg years). Also, if you listen to some of Imus' older show clips, he was doing a very Stern like show when he and Howard were on WNBC; Howard's bullshit about him just playing records is pretty unfounded. At one time, Howard was right to call him out on the Imus ranch, but with all of Beth's NSAL bullshit I think it's a dead heat at this point. That, and Imus still shows up 5 days a week with cancer. Nappy headed hoes for the win!
Imus is horrible. One Stern broadcast I dream of hearing is the one he'll do the day Imus croaks.
Do you base that on actually listening to Imus or just what Howie tells you? The current Imus show is basically neutered due to the nappy headed hos controversy, but there was a period where I really think they were on par and Imus and especially Sid Rosenberg were doing far edgier material (after KC was fired and before Sirius). From Wikipedia:
I heard him recently on the way home from work (apparently the classic rock station on in the car plays him in the morning). I couldn't even understand the man. It was like a deranged Tolkien-esque slurring for about 6 minutes, then I turned off the radio.
In his 70's, I doubt he has the energy to be a prick.
I remember Imus from before Howard arrived at NBC and he was pretty much as Howard describes him. It was mostly music. A couple of times an hour he'd play a bit - like nuking your boss or having your school eaten by that gigantic worm. The boss one was particuarly interesting. A caller would try to convince Imus that his boss deserved it. Usually Imus would comply by playing an explosion sound effect. But every once in a while he would side with the boss and refuse to nuke him. Looking back the bits were dumb. But as a dopey eleven year old, they seemed cool.
I think what I was trying to say is that the stuff you describe, i.e. the Moby Worm stuff, isn't that different from early WNBC Howard either. He and Fred were doing a lot of shitty canned bits as well along with playing music. I think Howard likes to pretend he was always 90's Howard and wasn't influenced at all by Steve Dahl or Imus, and pretends he didn't know of Bubba or Ferrell despite the fact that he is on tape ripping Bubba years before he supposedly learned of him (for christ's sake, Howard could have checked marksfriggin.com before making those claims at least!).
The charity was his ranch and not North Shore AL calenders?
Never listened to Imus ever. But that dude was railroaded by the liberal media for his "nappy headed ho's" comment. His career and legacy was basically ruined because of that. Hard not to sympathize with a guy who was attacked by a lynch mob over a simple quick joke. The same lynch mob that also ran wild with Duke Lacrosse and Tawana Brawley and never apologized for those incidents. But they made Imus apologize for a joke, and then fired him anyways. Ask anyone what Imus is most famous for and they'll say it's for being fired for being a racist.
At least the politically correct establishment can't drive these guys to suicide like they did with Lenny Bruce. And guys like Stern, O&A, Kinison, Gilbert, and Hicks always railed against the politically correct conformist establishment and their hardcore fans rallied around them. At least Lenny Bruce didn't die for nothing. This is one of those things where guys like Stern, Gilbert, Patrice, Hicks, and Kinison rise above guys like O&A, Tosh, Kramer, and Imus. The first guys never apologized. The others took it rather than fight back.
Howard would double down about his comments on the Columbine shootings, LA riots, wishing cancer on people, or whatever. Never take FCC fines sitting down. Because he knew that once you apologize it's fucking over. You'll be apologizing right and left forever. Some guys can beat a firing like O&A. But Imus was ruined by the lynch mob. Why take that chance? Especially when you've done nothing wrong.
The only time Howard really apologized was over that singer Selena's death. He did an apology in Spanish for some station in Texas. But that was because Selena's psycho fans, like the one that killed her (some set of fans she had), were sending in bomb threats and deaths threats to that station. Considering one of her fans already killed her, why push things any further.
Howard was not influenced by Imus. Imus was obsessed with Stern. He'd listen to Howard's show. Ask Howard to be on his show. Ask Howard to write bits for him. And after Howard used to call his mom on the air...Imus called Howard's mom. Not even his own mom...but Howard's mom.
Howard played music because he was forced to. The entire game back then was spinning music. Cousin Brucie was a force in radio. That's how bad radio was.
Howard was influenced by Jackie more than anyone else. Listen to the shows before the flying gag and after the flying gag. It's like an entirely different team of broadcasters took over.
