On 12 November, Rosetta’s Philae probe is set to make the first-ever landing on a comet when it touches down on Comet 67P/Churyumov–Gerasimenko.

Separation of the lander is planned for about 09:03 GMT (10:03 CET), and touch down should follow about seven hours later, at 16:02 GMT (17:02 CET).

Follow this historic event via live updates posted in the following channels:

Webcast will begin 19:00 GMT (20:00 CET) 11 November and continue (with pauses) to cover crucial mission milestones overnight on Tuesday and through Wednesday. Check the ESA TV schedule here for detailed times.

Updated with news and information direct from the mission operations and science teams.

Yeah, was it the thread with the high res photos that had that awesome video showing its route through the solar system to meet the comet? So fucking fascinating.

I say it never makes it as it was designed to land on a "dirty snowball" not a mountain ripped from a planet. They are using ice screws and some kind of harpoon system to bring it down, that shit will just bounce off the surface. Only chance might be aiming for that sandy looking area around the neck.

Other big issue is if it gets zapped by an electrical discharge from the Comet as it comes in. The deep impactor had that happen just before it impacted tempel 1. The lander has been in orbit awhile now tho so maybe the difference in potential between the lander and comet won't be as great. Deep impactor was all copper and screaming right along when it smacked the surface so the static charge alone from that would have been huge.
