FYI, the 2015 edition of the Indianapolis 500 just got underway on ABC. And things are not off to a good start. It's hard to retain viewers when you run the first 15 laps under caution. :jj:

Wiggy related because, like THSS, the Indy 500 is but a shadow of its former greatness.

I was just telling my wife about when the race would run in the morning, and ABC would replay it in prime time so you would know who won already. I'm trying to remember the year they started carrying it live. :bigthink

TV is trying to kill the Indy 500 just like its trying to kill the NFL. We're currently on lap 32 and about 5 of them have been televised live - the rest have either been caution laps or green flag laps run while the network was airing commercials.

I'm watching a live feed from a German sports channel and it stays live even during the U.S. commercials. The ticker and the commentators disappear, but the racing continues. ESPN UK is also showing it, but they go to commercial when the US does.

Indy was great back in the days of the Unsers, Andrettis, Foyt, Rutherford, Jones and Johncock. But greed got the better of the sport and they cut their own throats when they split up into the competing IRL and CART series. They've never recovered from that. Nowadays most Americans have lost interest and the race has largely been relegated to a competition between a bunch of Euros and South Americans. This year there are only four American drivers starting in the top 20 spots. No fan of A.J. Foyt or Al Unser is going to give a fuck about a field like that.

Nascar, on the other hand, has been managed about as well as any major sport in history. And they have the advantage of close finishes in most of their races, in stark contrast to many open wheel series - particularly F1.

Indy500 where we can watch smelly noisey cars go endlessly round and round while hopeing for a crash to relieve the boredom.
