Sweet fancy Jesus! I'm selling a guitar and someone interested lives in Germany so I got them a shipping quote. Both UPS and FedEx are about $640......WTF! It's insured for a hefty amount ($7.5k) but that still was way more than I expected.

That seems like a lot. How much was the insurance portion of that?

I am supposed to be getting a big order of clothing for Fall from a UK website and I am miffed because I forgot that I will probably have to pay tariffs to pick it up from the post office.

I would be worried it is a scam and they are gonna send a bad check and your bank will accept it, let you withdraw the funds and then you are stuck when the check is found to be fake.

If it's something cheap customs forms aren't a big deal...I would imagine Lemmy has to fill out a big ass form when he goes.

That's a good question. The online systems didn't give me a breakdown or I couldn't find it. I shipped this same guitar across country for warranty work insured for $10k and the insurance was about $20 IIRC so I didn't think that would impact the price too bad internationally. Regardless it NEEDS the insurance so even if that's a large portion it's not an option to go without.

There is only one custom form, regardless of what is being sent. It is a pain in the ass to fill out but only because you have to be specific about who you are, who you are sending it to and the contents and value of the box.

Was just wondering. I insured something for $30,000, but it was shipped domestically and the total shipping was around $350. Weight was around 20-30 pounds.

I think there are two different forms depending on the value.

Normally I'd be concerned of this as well but I have someone I trust who is vouching for the guy so I'm not too concerned.

Last time I sold a guitar overseas it was valued at about $4k and at UPS the forms were pretty well filled out after my computer entries were done in the kiosk. Wasn't too big of a deal......certainly not as bad as I expected.

The customs may be a deal breaker for the buyer though.......he's looking at $1875 in charges. ZOINKS!!!! I offered to pick up the shipping. DOUBLE ZOINKS!!!!!!!

every time i ship overseas i have to do the local country's customs declaration plus ours. so far i absolutely hate sending things to Greece: they sit on stuff, try to shake down the recipients before releasing the items, and generally break things.

I bought my wife a pair of Birkenstocks off of Ebay earlier this year. The shipping was $19 was for the pair, and they were valued a little over $200.

    Cha ching.

What value of stuff are you shipping? I've never had to do anything for the country I'm sending it to. I just fill out the US Customs form but I send old shit to people.
