This is not a Republican or a Democrat issue. The Iraqi soldiers fucked over the entire US. We spent billions upon billions training those assholes and it has been all for naught.

They are giant fucking pussies and we are assholes for getting involved since the beginning. Let the Jews and Arabs fight, and let the muzzies kill each other. Fuck that entire region, turn it into a massive parking lot.

Absolutely correct but anyone could have seen that result a million miles away. After thousands of years being bullied by various groups of the day why would they now stand up and rise? But now President Incompetent touts his 60 nation coalition. And what exactly has anyone actually done?

This is what happened in Viet Nam. The government of the South was corrupt, the army had no will to fight for them. No matter how much money was poured into the Nam the South would not stand and fight without strong US support. When the US left the collapse was faster than anyone thought possible. There were many brave South Vietnamese soldiers (as I'm sure there are in Iraq) but when you know your superiors are more interested in how much money they can steal from your supply budget how hard are you going to fight?

You can't make an army with money. You need esprit de corps and strong leadership. Supply and training come after that. We destroyed the Iraqi armies pride by beating them in like five days and then disbanded them. An army that were hard core fighters against the Iranians for years, just gone in a matter of months.

Now the Iraqi's will need to burn to build a new military force worth it's name. The best leaders will need to rise and the Americans will need to stop supporting them. The trick is if we back off too soon they collapse like South Viet Nam did (which, while horrible for a lot of people in the south probably ended up saving lives in the end and ended a decades long struggle for independence. It never triggered a "domino effect") but if we don't back off they never rise.

We caused it all. Stupid, obvious mistakes that any high school history student could see coming but Americans get fooled by jingoistic saber rattling over and over again.

we should never have been there in the first place: they obviously did not want our "assistance" nor did they want us to "free" them. we went over there to be in Afghanistan, not Iraq but some idiot had a made up agenda. we should not be expending any effort or money there; we should let ISIS have Iraq if that is what they want. if the rest of the region is concerned then let them do something about it.

So.........The American's ran like school girls during the Korean War. The Iraq's know ISIS is supplied by the USA, why would they care about our feelings now?

Why would we be there trying to help people who don't want us to help them, and didn't ask for our help?

yeah its not a secret the iraqi army is rife with corruption it is not an army it is a jobs program, if anyone remembers "the surge" from a few years back ppl were shouting "the surge worked" not realizing part of the strategy was paying insurgents to switch alliegence and join the iraqi army, ofc they have no will to fight they are only there cause it paid better than alqeada

I think that you're underestimating the power of tribalism in Iraqi society. I mean, it's basically on point, but most fighters switched sides from tribal loyalty, not money. Also, they are running now because the penalties for crossing ISIS (torture, decapitation, crucifixion for yourself, rape and/or slavery for your family) are much greater than those for crossing the Iraqi government (nothing). ISIS is very effectively communicating this to the Iraqi army, resulting in the performance we've seen.

we bought off the tribal leaders, i mean whatever its not terribly important difference ...

as for the isis penalties, lol well maybe if they idk tried to fight back that wouldnt be such a concern :jj: you're acting like its a foregone conclusion isis would win, by #s and military might alone the iraqi army should route them

I think it does make a difference from the strategic perspective of the U.S. govt. Paying off a few, easily identifiable leaders is much easier than paying off a multitude of mercenaries. It's also a very different perspective in a strategy sense. It gives a hope of success where mere money doesn't. And in terms of the penalties, it's a simple risk/reward calculus. There is no real penalty for a sunni member of the army for running at this point. Fighting results in almost only negative consequences. Shia soldiers may have slightly different factors playing, but it's still a pretty easy decision unless it's actually your home village that's being attacked.

Time to completely and totally withdraw from the Middle East. We're producing enough oil. We don't need them.

Let them have at it. There are no good guys there.

If they try an attack here, then we go in and vaporize.
