I think last night underscored that while Tom Brady is headed to the Hall of Fame some day, the only truly indispensable member of the Patriots is Bill Belichick.
Nobody is better at wringing every last drop of talent out of who he's got to work with and turning chicken shit into chicken salad. I'm not a Pats fan but my hat's off to Darth Hoody. In my opinion he's the greatest NFL coach of all time.

You needed yesterday's game to come to this conclusion? In the free agent and salary cap era - is there anyone close?

Funny how people come around and call him perhaps the best coach of all time, when a few years ago they labeled him as a cheater.

As a Patriots fan, I wanted no part of him when he was hired in 2000. He didn't do much in Cleveland as head coach, and even his first season as Patriots coach, he was 5-11. Then he starts 0-2 in 2001, and I think everyone here is expecting him to be fired. I guess that's when fate stepped in, and Brady replaced Bledsoe. There isn't much Belichick's done wrong since then, despite the cheating allegations. Six Super Bowl appearances, four titles, an undefeated regular season in 2007, 3-0 this season with Brady out (that in itself could lead to another undefeated regular season after Brady returns).

In this day and age of the salary cap and free agency, yes, Belichick is the best coach of this era. Winning another Super Bowl or two would leapfrog him above just about everyone else for greatest of all time. Someday, there may be a trophy named after him.

He has won 73% of his games with the Pats over the last 16+ years. That's a pretty insane number.

No question. It's always a good day to see them lose, just because I hate dynasties that aren't in my city, but Belichick and the management team in NE have been unreal in keeping this team one to be reckoned with for such an extended period of time, even with the various constraints of the salary cap and player movement.

I think Brady is a big help but! check the season when Brady miss3ed for a knee "I believe" and they were 11-5 and made the playoffs with Matt Cassell at QB. Belicheck is not only the head coach but also the GM of the team, that's incredibly hard to do this day and age.

they had a really good discussion on rusillo and Kanell this morning, if you could have one to start a new team who would you take? Brady or Belichick. I personally would pick Belichick.
