Bills To Toronto Concerns Raised By Documents; Is Buffalo Being Played?

BUFFALO, N.Y. (CBSNewYork/AP) — A Buffalo Bills fan group has uncovered documents that suggest rocker Jon Bon Jovi’s Toronto-based prospective ownership group has plans to relocate the franchise north of the border.

In a release issued Thursday, the Buffalo Fan Alliance identified several announcements referring to Rogers Communications consultant, Roger Rai, as part of the ownership group “attempting to acquire and move the Buffalo Bills to Toronto.”

Rai told The AP on Wednesday he’s not involved with the group’s ownership bid. He added the references connecting him to the proposed Bills’ purchase were “a mistake on my behalf,” and the result of a misinterpretation made by a co-worker who wrote the biography.............................

This really isn't news anymore. This has been a rumour for a long time, and JBJ has been seen in Toronto quite a bit, apparently working on buying the Bills. Buffalo fans would go nuts. They already hate that one home game has been played in Toronto for several years now.

Capitalism often appears cruel, but is almost always efficient in the long run. Buffalo and it's suburbs have been shrinking since the 1960s. They now rank 49th in metro area population in the US and dropping. Do the citizens of that area have a birthright to an NFL team in perpetuity? No.

Many current and former players have good relationships with the people there, and the late Ralph Wilson was beloved -- interesting perhaps, but not compelling. If the franchise can make significantly more money as another city's home team, the move will probably happen eventually.

Before anyone hauls out the Green Bay Packers "small town" success example, please realize that is a grossly over hyped story. GB is the only NFL team in Wisconsin (#20 population state), is less than two hours drive from Milwaukee and not much further from Madison. On the other hand, venture not far from Buffalo and you're as like to encounter a Giants, Jets, or Steelers fan as you are a Bills fan.

A handful of other interested billionaire$ either from or doing business in the Buffalo area who unequivocally affirm to keep the team there will receive favorable preference from the league and thumbs up from the majority of voting owners over Bon Jovi's group or that assclown Trump for that matter.

This has been a rumor for a long time, but I thought that SkyDome (or Rogers Center) did not meet the minimum seating capacity for an NFL team?

I agree that the Bills are not going anywhere.....

I don't understand why this is an issue, just tell people and put it in the contract that the team can't be moved.

I am inclined to agree with you, but your point actually makes moving the Bills to Toronto less attractive in one way- fan loyalty. Toronto is not a "Bills town". So they don't have that built-in fanbase. People there are fans of all different teams and it will be tough to sway them. Sure, they'll show up when their team is in town, but season ticket sales might be a challenge. Plus the stadium is way too small for the NFL. Then there's the CFL angle. The NFL has been reluctant to enter Canada because of the CFL and the relationship with the NFL.

    Lots of wacky shit....

Yeah, I have no idea if Toronto is the right landing spot. But the population trends don't bode well for long term profitability in Buffalo. Sentiment only gets you so far.

I just used the google, and 13 teams have lower attendance than the Bills, so i don't see the problem.
Have a better team, more people will come.

The bid by Bon Jovi's group probably won't win, but it looks like the consultant to his group is doing some damage control after someone accidentally put the truth into his bio.

They should sell it to him before KISS gets it and changes the team name to KISS.
