Is it legal for a bar/restaurant to add gratuity to the bill?

Rob Gronkowski's bar bill... they decide to charge him $1,400 gratuity automatically.

"Well, it's 20%, and that's pretty standard for good service..."

If you order a $40 dollar bottle of champagne 20% is $8.

Does a different server, who does exactly the same amount work opening up $1,595 bottle deserve $319?

This is usually the part where several of you geniuses will say, "Those servers (who average $60+/hour) don't get paid minimum wage by their employer (you know, when they agreed to all this when they accepted to take this job), that means it our job as patrons to make up the difference".

    Such bullshit.

Gronkowski had a $10,000 bar tab. He may want to think about smoking pot from now on

What's funny is how people never EVER think to tip the minimum wage service-industry workers in fast food, at the dry cleaners, dishwashers, etc. - all because, according to you halftards, those kids busting their asses are more than well compensated at minimum wage, yet the poor, suffering bartender (who average many, many times more than minimum wage) needs your charity because he twisted open a bottle of Bud Light for you.

Nah, this isn't the first time LP has started a thread about gratuity on a bill.

They need to let you know up front that gratuity is added to the bill, this way it's your choice whether to dine there or not.

If you get blind sided by it then by all means create a ruckus.

I'm a server and we make 2.15 an hour and I not get a check. I live off tips. I understand the argument of the original post. 1400 grat is a lot but most understand before they order. We add 18% to parties of 10 or more. It is to make sure that if a large party takes up your station all night that you don't get screwed. But when the reservation is booked they are told that. So it is the customers choice if they want to keep the reservation and if the service is bad the manager can take it off.

While I kind of agree with you. It would suck for him to stiff the poor person waiting on him (not implying he would).

I remember, during my brief foray into the waiting world, a family of 12 coming in, close to closing time, and racking up a four hundred and some odd dollar bill. They then proceeded to tip 6 bucks. That is bullshit for the amount of work done serving a group of 12

Bartenders do not get a 15% gratuity. That's just ridiculous. They get a buck or 2 per drink order. If you run a tab I would say it depends how long you were there. Like 10 dollars an hr.

Right on, sister. And minimum 20% from me. Unless you totally suck, which I doubt you do.
