We really want to get a dog.

We are a family of four, two young kids .

We want to get a smaller dog.

We went to the shelter to get one and they wouldn't let us get one because we are out of the house most of the day.

We have two cats that could keep it company.

Should we just not get a dog?

You have probably answered your own question.

Would you want to live there if you were a dog?

Probably depends on what kind of dog. I would advise against a Boxer.

...i have to vote no. the dog will fuck up while youre gone and it wont be its fault. if your wife was a stay at home mom then id say different but i think you have to give up more time than you have for a dog. other people might see it differently and say yas.

it would be the most loved dog of all time!

i've never had my own dog. I have always had cats and obviously there is no issue leaving them be for a bit.

That's pretty long. Dogs are super social animals that get really attached to their family. They hate to be alone. I could do that to him maybe once or twice a week, but not more.

Wow you wouldn't think a shelter would be that picky

6 hours in the house alone? What's the big deal?

Most dogs would probably love to have 6 hours of privacy in someone's house

My sister had one of those miniature wiener dogs they had to put a shock collar on him he was so fucking loud

That said, many of my favorite childhood family memories involve our family dog. It's a really great addition to a family. They are seriously the coolest, sweetest animals in the world.

    that's the rub.

i've always wanted my own dog and i know the kids would love it.

We're fairly active as a family and would go out walking in the wicklow mountains quite a bit.

As you can see from the conflicting replies here, there is an argument to be made on both sides of the issue.

we'd be looking for a little guy like this. We go camping in France every summer and have been toying the idea of picking one up in France and bringing it home (i live in Ireland):

I have 5 pups and they are locked up from 6:30 to about 3:30 several days a week. They are fine. I would think one dog "might" be an issue if it gets lonely. Crate train it and spend tons of family time with it when you are home and it will be fine.

...plus there are a lot of variables. is it a puppy, small dog, german sheppard. all those things make a difference. a dog is as much responsibility as a kid.

If you have a nice yard where the dog can do his thing, that would be of help, too.

7 hours straight a day is pretty normal for most dogs.

It would not be the most loved dog, because it would be alone all day. Dogs are social animals, and leaving it home without human contact isn't fair to the dog.
