If it is, what's beyond it?

How can it be infinite? How can something really be limitless? If it's infinite it has no form or volume, defying everything we think we know about physics. Hawking says the universe has been expanding since the Big Bang, and eventually it'll start contracting. But expanding and contracting in what?

    Nothing?!

We're just quarks standing on an electron as it orbits the nucleus of an atom that makes up part of a giant testicle.

they say eventually everything in the universe will have moved so far away from us that
we'll only be able to see what's in our own galaxy

we probably won't exist by then
    but that's pretty wild

You can't wrap your mind around it, or at least I can't. There is a video out there that shows earth and then as if a camera slowly pulls away you are sent on a visual as you leave the orbit, the solar system, the Galaxy, etc until you are so far away we get to what the Hubble can't even see. It's crazy how small we really are in something so huge and infinite. It's like the carlin bit when he said he use to ask the nuns at school if God could make a rock so big that even he couldn't lift it.

Totally. But again. Moved far away into what? If the universe has an expanding edge, what's beyond it? Actual nothingness? Wrap your head around THAT.

Also, Tipsy, while I have your attention, does decaf make us poop the same as regular coffee?

Not everything in physics is capable of being pictured in our minds. "Nothingness" is one of those things because we've never experienced it. There are also things at the other end of the spectrum of the very small, there are properties of quarks like what physicists call "color" and "spin" and "charm" and "flavor" that can't be pictured in our mind's eye, either, because they don't actually refer to color shades or rotation, etc. (And before any of you religious dummies pounce on that, you can't imagine what there was "before" your gods, either, so just STFU with your nonsense.)

According to astrophysicists, space (to which they refer as "space-time" because they don't exist without one another) isn't expanding "into" anything. Space-time has been expanding ever since the Big Bang and we now know that its expansion rate is still increasing rather than decreasing as was still thought until relatively recently since we got data from the Hubble Telescope. Einstein's Relativity originally predicted that continuing expansion mathematically, but he added a "cosmological constant" to adjust for what he thought had to me a mistake because it conflicted with a static (non-expanding) universe that was believed to be the case before Hubble discovered irrefutable evidence of its expansion in 1929. Matter doesn't expand "into" infinite pre-existing space; space-time and all matter in it expand together and span roughly 14 billion light years in all directions. It can be demonstrated mathematically but it's just not capable of being imagined in our mind's eye because genuine nothingness (vs. empty existing space) is outside of anything we've ever experienced.

When we look far enough into space, we're also looking equally far back into time and when we look far enough back (into the first hundreds of thousands of years after the Big Bang), we can no longer see anything because light didn't exist until the universe cooled enough for photons to "decouple" from the opaque plasma "soup" that was too hot to release photons. That's another thing that we're not capable of picturing.

    Thank you, Clumpy Stern.

What's hard to grasp is that something has dimensions and it's expanding, but there's nothing beyond those dimensions. The only thing that exists is getting bigger, but it's not getting bigger in a larger volume of anything else.

Hubble ultra deep field. All those blurs are galaxies with millions of stars. If you think we are alone in this universe you are a complete idiot.

That is some deep shit. Though I am not one, I don't put down religious people for their beliefs. It's impossible to comprehend the nothingness. Contemplating It can be depressing.
