Trump and Hillary are so polarizing - is there a realistic chance that an Independent candidate emerges and who might that be?

    Really a great question.

I can't think of a single person..... We don't have a national hero. Maybe Landon Donovan if we would have won the world cup. it really makes you appreciate a guy like Eisenhower.

Do we have a national hero?

Another thought...I know there are plenty of Apple haters but a guy like Steve Jobs who was a leader in technology or pop culture. Our smartest people go into business, not politics.

    Mark Cuban? George Clooney?

    Luke Skywalker?

In the context of Ike, it could well have been General Patraeus, had he not turned out to be such a cheating scumbag and possible security risk in real life. If he were 10 years younger, the esteemed Warren Buffett could have given it a good run. The irony is that after so many years of being a spoiler, a younger Ralph Nader might have stood a chance against this gaggle of goofballs.

Nobody has a chance as a third party, but it would be cool if someone like an Elon Musk jumped into the race.

I was still hoping Bloomberg would step in. I think it'd be hilarious to see billionaires duke it out.

read about his security issues... and possible breaches. Adultery just makes him a scumbag, I'm sure you'll agree.. but security breaches over some strange pussy makes him a weak and vulnerable scumbag with misplaced priorities.

Trump is going to win the nomination. I believe that conservative bigwigs may encourage a "tried and true" conservative to run as an independent. Will this split the party and get Hillary elected? Yes. But I think there is some belief among some conservatives that the republican brand will be damaged less by a Hillary win and regrouping for 2020, than by a Trump presidency.

Another possible scenario is that they screw Trump out of the nomination at a brokered convention and he runs as an independent. This would also result in a win for Hillary, as the republican vote again would be split between two candidates.

If there is no third party candidate, I think people are underestimating Trump's strength. I think he could win, head to head (although I am hoping not).

There might be a sort of "history repeats" element to this if Clinton wins because a third party candidate splits the republican vote, because that's how Bill got voted in the first time around (when Perot ran as a third party candidate).
