I couldn't find ALS.org on guidestar, so I just put in als.org in my browser and it took me the the new york (nearest) "chapter" of this organization. I'm not positive, but it looks like that they hauled in over 2 million in the 2013 tax year (page 9), but only 12K went to ALS research (page 10)? Am reading this wrong?

Listen to the latest Jim Florentine podcast about the whole ice bucket ALS shit, my dumb ass couldn't figure out how to post it, but Jim goes on a hell of a rant about these bullshit charities.

After reviewing the financials, it appears that most of the donations went to purses, giant shoes and kitten food.

That makes no sense to me.

You are indeed reading it incorrectly...temporarily restricted net assets refers to monies that they can't use until some condition is met (donated but with conditions...death, sale of an asset). If you look at the P&L on page 4, part of their liabilities (roughly 400k) goes to research. Yes, most are shady, but per the financials, they seem to be using it the right way.

This is the ALS Association's 2013 tax return....
    http://www.alsa.org/assets/pdfs/form-20990-20-20f2014-20irs-20sgd-2006-11-2014.pdf

Salaries for the leadership of the group:

    Jane H. Gilbert – President and CEO – $339,475.00
    Daniel M. Reznikov – Chief Financial Officer – $201,260.00
Steve Gibson – Chief Public Policy Officer – $182,862.00
Kimberly Maginnis - Chief of Care Services Officer – $160,646.00
Lance Slaughter - Chief Chapter Relations and Development Officer – $152,692.00
Michelle Keegan – Chief Development Officer – $178,744.00
John Applegate – Association Finance Officer – $118.726.00
David Moses – Director of Planned Giving – $112,509.00
Carrie Munk – Chief Communications and Marketing Officer – $142,875.00
Patrick Wildman – Director of Public Policy – $112,358.00
Kathi Kromer – Director of State Advocacy – $110,661.00

Total administration costs were just under $2 million. “Other salaries and wages” (Part IX line 7) were $3.6 million, with another half million dollars in “pension plans” and “employee benefits.” Expenses for non-employee labor were about $4 million, and “travel expenses” exceeded $1.3 million.

So total costs for labour to run the association was around $12.5 million, from revenues received totaling $24 million.

Over 50% of what the ALS Association receives appears to support salaries of people working for the Association, based on these tax returns.

It makes me want to die of ALS when I realize that most people won't spit in the mouth of a baby dying of thirst if it's not trendy to do so.

Where the fuck were you with your donation money before it became all the rage?

Every charity is by necessity inefficient, and I'm not saying not to give.

But what is bothersome is that of the category "research" , the money then becomes relatively unaccounted for. "Research" could include the new $2500 desk some medical administrator making $350,000 a year just got for her office at a research facility. I know they spare no expense. I have personal knowledge of the goings-on at a cancer research charity from an employee there and it was sickening.

By the way, you think they're going to give you your donation back when they find a cure and sell it for $10,000 a dose? Unfortunately life is what they call "inelastic demand" in economics. They have us over a barrel.
