In Munich in 1990, my IBM/Zenith had a 20mb drive and I couldn't image ever needing much more.

That machine was a generation later, with integrated circuits. This is where I started, discrete transistors, second generation. Here is the console for what I started on, IBM 1401. If you ran into a halt on a long job, the operator could "dial around" the problem my manipulating the sense switches affecting the registers. If you fucked up, there was hell to pay! We had no disks, just tape and cards for I/O.
