I think Jackie was a great asset to the show and wrote great lines for Howard. But, after hearing him on Gilbert's podcast today, I now understand why Robin and Fred were against him coming back after Artie left.

He was insufferable. Every story he told that involved him made himself look like the hero- the person who invented something, or influenced someone to do something great.

He said he used to take one of the joke notes he would pass to Howard during interviews, and have whatever celebrity guest was in at the time sign it. SO CLEARLY as passive aggressive way of saying "Don't be fooled. I'M the funny one".

I don't know, I found him very off putting today.

Jackie was shot out of a cannon- he's really exhausting to listen to.

And he said he's still waiting to hear back after trying to crawl back for his Stern Show job.,,,, WAAHHHHH :artiejj:

Would anyone know who Jackie was if he was never on the show?

Very doubtful. During the podcast, Gilbert's sidekick Frank asked Jackie if he'd known Gilbert during the pre-Stern stand-up days. Jackie said no, because while Gilbert worked in New York City and LA, Jackie mostly stayed on Long Island and parts of New Jersey. I think it's telling that Jackie never played the big clubs in NY before he got on Stern.

I first saw Jackie at this LI bar called Barrymore's on Hempstead Turnpike. It was a dumpy little dive. This was probably his pre Stern Show appearances.

Jackie worked in the context of the show at the time, but only because of the way Howard framed his stuff. Jackie by himself is the ultimate hack comedian. To me, the funniest part of Jackie on the show was others doing that high-voiced impression of him.

It's a coping mechanism to deal with losing all that money, pussy, and perks from the Stern show. He cost himself at least $15,000,000 so far, and God knows how much high-quality road-tail.

I just listened to that "Jackie gets busted asking guests to sign stuff" bit. He didn't even ask guests to sign stuff; he asked Grillo to do it. That was a scumbag move.

A lot of it was played up for the air, but it seems Jackie really was a chintzy prick, and occasionally downright weasely (the autographs thing, the Rodney thing).

I'd still rather have him over Benjy, obviously.

I agree that Jackie wrote much, much better lines for Howard than Benjy does. But I never realized until today how Jackie operated.

Jackie would have Grillo take a note with the best joke he had written about the guest to the guest and ask them to sign it. It is so amazing passive aggressive. Totally saying to the famous person "I'm the one behind the curtain". When you agree to be a writer for someone, you basically agree to be behind the scenes. It's unseemly, what Jackie did. And he's on Gilbert TELLING people about it.

Gilbert's podcast was funnier a few weeks ago when he had a younger man on, Dick Van Dyke.
