Our Toy Manchester Terrier, Jackie, suffered some pretty severe injuries when he was attacked by our Akita mix, Brody, last Friday. He was in the puppy ER for the weekend. His spleen was protruding from his side so the doctors had to open him up to check for internal injuries and put everything back where it should be. Luckily nothing inside was damaged and he kept his spleen. After getting about a dozen drain tubes and 130 staples he is back home on the road to recovery. He gets a good amount of meds several times a day for pain management and to fight infection. I'm also giving him a few warm sponge baths a day and have to put warm compresses where he is heavily bruised twice a day to help blood flow/healing.

The vet said some of his muscle was "hamburgered" and swelling has given him some temporary (hopefully) nerve damage. He also has a few broken/seperated ribs. He wasn't able to stand/walk for a few days after getting him home but he is begrudgingly getting up to follow me around now. It isn't pretty but everything is working so I'm pretty sure he'll get most of his function back and be somewhat "normal" again eventually. Terriers are tenacious fuckers.

    What he should look like.....

To make matters more ponderous Mrs. Lemmy got injured (somewhat minor) as well so all horse and dog care is on me instead or the normal split of the workload. :fil:

Unfortunately there weren't many options for Brody. :rip:

Before it is mentioned. I am an asshole and it's all my fault (well not really but someone has to be responsible). :toptip:

    Dang! Poor little feller...:(

I thought Akitas were relatively peaceful, even though they're huge....:dontknow:
So you had to "put him down"? That would suck.

I don't blame you for putting the Akita down in that situation...hopefully the other guy recovers quickly.

What instigated the attack? How did you stop Brody from killing him? How long have you had both dogs?

Hope Jackie makes a speedy recovery. Tough little guy pulled through it.
    Sorry about Brody, but understandable.
    Best wishes to the Mrs.

    Thanks all!

He was very peaceful and protective of us. With other animals? Not so much. More tolerating than peaceful.

I can honestly say that putting him down was the worst thing that I have ever done. We had a nice morning of work in the barn, I walked him around the property and I cooked him lunch before taking him to the vet. All he had to do was not kill (or try to) the other dogs.

    :jj:

We've had Jackie for about 4 years and Brody for 6 months. Jackie wouldn't back down to Brody and there were ongoing minor issues. Brody responded great to training but getting dogs to get along is a whole other issue.

I wasn't home. Mrs. Lemmy took care of it and from the little she has said it wasn't pretty and took all she had. She got bit pretty good on the hand but said it was incidental.....Brody never turned on her, she just took one for the team saving Jackie. If he did attack her I would have put him down myself without the vet. She said nothing started it......Brody just walked by her all calm and grabbed Jackie like a chew toy.

We have very little idea what happened to Brody before we got him. He was bounced from home to home before we have him a shot. We were sort of a last chance for him and I feel like I failed the poor little guy.

I love dogs but I think I would have had to kill the Akita for doing that.

Really though, tough choice but I would have done the same thing.
You're a good man Lemmy, and I love your music!
