    Fake chest, that's why it sticks out at the beginning. It is able to go forward and hide his actual body hitting the table. You notice the flap on the front and back. The top of the table is a thin black sheet that slides with him as he walks through it. The glasses, ashtray etc are held by magnets so the sheet can pass underneath them. This is why he had the tail leading behind him and then at the end brought the jacket to the front and it allowed the final part of the sheet to shift comfortably in place.

    At least that's my guess. Searching the net I couldn't get an answer other than "mirrors" or my favorite "it's actually an illusion"
