Reports: Jared Fogle beaten in Colo. prison USA TODAY NETWORKGinger Rough, The Arizona Republic3:01 p.m. EDT March 16, 2016 Disgraced Subway pitchman Jared Fogle was attacked and left beaten and bloodied in a prison fight, according to reports that surfaced Wednesday. Entertainment website TMZ.com reported that Fogle was attacked in a prison yard in late January by 60-year-old Steven J. Nigg, and that Nigg "pushed Fogle down and then unloaded a barrage of punches to his face." Nigg, as it turns out, has ties to Arizona, and a criminal history in the state that dates back to the mid-1970s. Both he and Fogle are currently serving sentences at the Federal Correctional Institution, Englewood, which is located in Littleton, Colo., about 9 miles outside of Denver. Calls to Fogle's attorney, Ronald Elberger, were not immediately returned Wednesday. According to the Arizona Department of Corrections website, Nigg was admitted in March 1977, when he was in his early 20s, on a 30-year-sentence for a crime spree that included multiple armed robberies, though details on his specific convictions were not immediately available. The Arizona DOC website shows that Nigg was disciplined a handful of times in 1988 for infractions that included striking a fellow inmate, verbally threatening another inmate and deliberately starting a fire. He was released from the Arizona prison system in 1990. It was not immediately clear Wednesday what landed Nigg in the federal penitentiary, though the online Federal Bureau of Prisons database shows that the now 60-year-old Nigg is scheduled to be released in 2024. Media reports said he is serving time on a gun charge. Fogle plead guilty last August to having had sex with minors and distributing and receiving child pornography, according to a plea agreement released by the U.S. attorney of the Southern District of Indiana. Jared Fogle was sentenced to 15 years and 8 months in prison in November for possession and distribution of child pornography and traveling across state lines for commercial sex with a minor.
