    That's pretty incredible. $250 million?

Wow. WashPost is one of the most important national papers in the country. Personally it's one of my regulars as far as internet viewing.

Bezos is friends with the family that owns the Post, specifically the guy whose mom, Katherine Graham, who was publisher during the Watergate crisis, was threatened by Nixon's attorney general that he'd put her "tit through the ringer."

Bezos has promised not to interfere, but it's probably just going to be an online newspaper.

The Post used to be delivered to Atlanta but that got cut in the last five years so the decline in circulation wasn't too surprising. Our local paper (AJC) saw some declines in circ due to slimming its circulation area from state-wide (and some border counties) to only the metro-Atlanta area (about 20 counties now). They are actually turning a profit now, and most the revenues still are generated from the dead-tree paper.

I've never gotten a physical WaPost paper. Do they lack ads? It seems to me to go online only is a deathknell for papers because something like 80% of their revenues are still generated from the physical paper.

To be clear: Yeah, the Washington Post lost a lot of money because of the death of print.

But The Washington Post Company, which sold the Post, still owns a bunch of shit, from real estate to TV stations, to Slate magazine. And they're going to keep it.

The significance of this sale is that the Post was owned by the same family for 80 years.

It was bought at auction in 1933 by this dude named Eugene Meyer, who became publisher.

    In 1946, Meyer's son-in-law became publisher.

In 1963, the son-in-law decided to blow his head off with a shotgun.

So the son-in-law's wife (and Meyer's daughter), Katherine Graham, became publisher and she was responsible for overseeing the Washington Post's transformation into a world-class newspaper, particularly when she pissed off the government with the whole Watergate Woodward & Bernstein stuff.

In 1979, her son (and Jeff Bezos' good pal) took over as publisher.

In 2000, some other dude became publisher.

And then, in 2008, Graham's 40-something granddaughter, Katharine Weymouth, became publisher, a position she will continue to hold after Jeff Bezos takes over.

Interestingly, this was published in the NY Times a few days ago:
