OMAHA, NEB. — Three third-grade boys are facing charges after authorities say they pinned down a classmate on an Omaha school playground and tried to remove her clothes, again putting Nebraska’s largest school district under fire for its handling of a possible attempted sexual assault case. The boys and the victim were all 8 years old when the incident happened in February on the playground of Belvedere Elementary School, an attorney for the girl’s family said Friday. Police confirmed that the three boys were arrested and charged as juveniles with attempted sexual assault, then later released to their parents. The girl told investigators that one of the boys “got on top of her ... and one was on each of her arms,†said attorney Brian Jorde, citing his copy of the sealed court case. “One of the boys had his hand over her mouth, so she couldn’t scream.†When other children spotted what was happening, eight to 12 fellow third-graders ran to the girl and pulled off the boys, Jorde said. The girl ended up with a bloody nose, though her parents weren’t contacted until hours later, around 5:15 p.m.
