John Carpenter is returning to oversee a new Halloween film, more than three and a half decades after introducing the iconic slasher saga, reports Variety.

The film-maker and composer will executive produce the 10th sequel to 1978’s Halloween, which introduced mask-wearing bogeyman Michael Myers and the young Jamie Lee Curtis as original scream queen Laurie Strode.

“Thirty-eight years after the original Halloween, I’m going to help to try to make the 10th sequel the scariest of them all,” said Carpenter, 68.

The new, as-yet-untitled film is being co-produced by Malek Akkad, son of the late Syrian American film-maker Moustapha Akkad, who oversaw the success of the first movie and several of its sequels. Jason Blum of Blumhouse Productions is on board as a second co-producer.

Producers will now work with production company Miramax to find a director for the 11th Halloween movie, previous instalments having taken more than $400m worldwide. It will be the first new film in the series since 2009’s critically scorned Rob Zombie-directed effort Halloween II, a sequel to the director’s 2007 remake of the original Halloween.

I guess he is tired of seeing every just bastardizing his movie and figures he will do it himself this time.

I liked Rob Zombie's reboot of the original, but the sequel was crap. I'm not sure we need any more Halloween films.

I read that he was given only three weeks to film it as well.

It still sucked, though, except for Laurie's dream/nightmare at the beginning

I think it's 31, and I doubt it will ever see a theatrical release.

John Carpenter was once a genius and directed possibly the single greatest sci-fi/horror thrillers of all time (The Thing). I don't know why or how it happened but he lost all his magic long ago. He hasn't directed a decent film in forever.

He had a really good run starting with Halloween in '78, then did The Fog in 1980, Escape From New York in '81, The Thing in '82, Christine in '83, and Starman in 1984. I think after that, he kind of hit a rut, though a lot of people like They Live, the 1988 movie with Roddy Piper.

The only thing I liked about the Rob Zombie reboot was Tyler Mane as Michael Myers.
