...my card was one of the cards caught up in the target scam. they said nothing had been charged on it yet but it was on a list of the cards the banks just got from target this morning. you guys might want to call whatever bank or cc company you may have used at target.

Always go directly to your bank in person if you get this kind of shit via mail or the phone.

They usually pull this scam on weekends because people fear that their card info will be used until the banks open again on Monday. If it's a credit card, call the card company directly. Bank card, call the main branch directly if you can't wait.

...they asked to verify the last 7 digits of the card number and my p.o. box. they didnt ask for the security code and the number i called is the banks number that i know by heart. it was a legit email and bank rep on the phone, credit unions are my banks theyre awesome even covered an overdraft for me at no charge. anyway if you shop at target and pay with a card of any kind you may want to put a stop on the card and get a new one.

I saw something on the news today that Target is offering free credit monitoring to those affected and the whole store is 10% off this weekend as an apology.

...10%? fuck them this went on since black friday over thanksgiving, they dragged their feet disclosing it too. the secret service is involved too now tracing it to s.e. asia as the news reported. no social security card info is embedded in these cards, just the card number and the security code so i.d. theft and a credit freeze arent needed.

companies and banks are being hacked more and more often. my experience with credit monitoring companies is that they blow chunks.

the federal laws covering credit cards are very clear but most people are unaware of them. your bank is required by law to take your side in fraud disputes. if you notify them that a charge to your bank charge card (not debit) is fraudulent they must issue an immediate chargeback. they then investigate your claim, which usually means asking the vendor to prove the charge is valid and you personally authorized it. if the vendor acknowledges they cannot prove the charge is valid, it remains fraudulent and the chargeback to your account is permanent. the bank must cover the loss via its own (often self) insurance. Target's credit cards are branded cards issued by TD Bank, Inc...

Thus no one affected by this latest issue with Target need worry: a better administration than the present one already covered your ass.

    btw,

some of you will know what this means: my earlier post is a summary of the relevant parts of FDIC Title 9 Electronic Fund Transfers aka "The Electronic Funds Transfer Act", 15 U.S.C. 1601, Section 901 thru 923 inclusive.

I have a thief stalker who regularly tries to open a line of credit with Wachovia using my identity. He's been trying every holiday for the past 3 years. Every time Wells Fargo denies his request the bank sends me a confirming note.
