This is Colin Powell, but it's a true story and I’ll keep it as brief as possible: Our housekeeper, Dariana, was a dirt poor Carib girl from the coast. She had an 8-month old baby boy her family was caring for while she worked. She and I became fast friends. One day the baby’s uncle came to her house and asked the grandmother (Dariana’s mother) if he could take the boy to meet his mother (the baby’s other grandmother). Dari’s mom didn’t think anything of it and said of course. That night the child was returned, fast asleep, but woke up screaming and wouldn’t stop, so they took him to the hospital. It seemed he had been brutally raped (yes, an 8-month old baby boy had been brutally raped). He died that night. The problem was there was no semen and the poor thing had been cleaned up so there was no proof who was responsible. The uncle was arrested but protested his innocence and since they couldn’t prove he did it, he was released. And there the matter rested. I should say at this point I went kind of loony at the inconsolable grief of my friend and her family, and even more so at the ineffectual “justice system.†I got loud and demanded somebody do something. I railed at the D.A., called the police and demanded action, wrote letters, I even hired a private investigator. It was all a waste of time and more frustrating than I can describe. A couple of weeks ago they found the uncle’s body on the road to the dump. He had been “shot to pieces.†This is a process where they shoot off your fingers and toes, then shoot you in various non-lethal body parts (knees, elbows, etc) before finishing you off with a bullet to the head. His crotch had also been burned out. The family has been told that justice was served. What say you?
