Howard, being such an anti-gun nut probably is rejoicing about this, if he even had a clue who he was.

I believe he was part of a Russian tank crew in WWII and had some mechanical engineering skills and decided to design a rifle that could work in all environments and not jam. I'm pretty sure I read that there are more AK-47's in the world than all other assault rifles combined.

I saw a documentary about him a few years ago so please correct me if my facts are wrong.

You're correct. He originally wanted to design farm machinery but instead created something that was really good at mowing people down.

The AK-47 is in no way the world's best rifle, but was probably one of the world's most forgiving field weapons.

That's right I forgot about the farm machinery part.
I have shot a semi auto knock off brand and that thing had some serious recoil kick.

Yup. Did a quick search before starting the post and didn't see anything, but he's another victim. Then again, 94 year old Russians aren't exactly visions of good health - the only thing probably keeping him alive the past few years was that he was pickled in vodka.

Even with minimal cleaning it does not jam. Ask a Vietnam vet how reliable the first M-16's were.... I think we lost a lot of soldiers from the rifle malfunctioning.

I saw a program where they submerged a vietnam era M16 and the AK. The M16 jammed after 1 shot, the AK fired flawlessly!!!!!

And the powder they were using wasn't right for such a humid climate with fluctuating temperatures. Yeah, the M16A1s were a disaster, but Eugene Stoner's design was brilliant.

I love my AKs and I respect the fuck out out of Kalashnikov's design as well. There are few things more fun than dumping a 30rd mag as fast as possible. Love him or hate him, there's no denying that ol' Mikhail truly changed the world.
