Edward Joseph O'Donnell, the father of Commack-raised comedian Rosie O'Donnell, died of cancer Sunday at age 81, a publicist for the Emmy Award-winning star said.

O'Donnell's publicist Cindi Berger confirmed his death to Newsday Sunday night.

Edward O'Donnell was an electrical engineer who worked most of his career for Grumman in Bethpage, according to a February 1997 Newsday profile of the comedian.

He raised O'Donnell and her four siblings after their mother, Roseann, died in March 1973 from breast cancer when the comedian was 11.

Sunday night, O'Donnell tweeted the phrase "through him -- with him -- in him . . ." on her Twitter account, alongside a photo of a collage of black and white pictures with the word "hurts."

She also posted a link on Twitter to the music video for the song, "St. Jude," by Florence and The Machine, quoting the lyrics: "And I'm learning, so I'm leaving/And even though I'm grieving, I'm trying to find the meaning/Let loss reveal it."

In a May 1998 interview with Newsday, O'Donnell spoke about seeking solace from her mother's death and her father's resulting grief by watching TV sitcoms.

"In my house, it took the place of parenting," she said. "My mother had died and my father was bereft, and there was really a lack of interaction with all the children."

The death comes days after O'Donnell reported that her 17-year-old daughter, Chelsea, was missing. The teen was later found at the Barnegat, New Jersey, home of Steven Sheerer, 25, who was arrested Saturday on charges he had inappropriate online communications with the teen.

As much as I detest Rosie, I don't get gleeful when someones parent dies. Both mine are off the planet and it is not fun..

Mother dies when she's young and grief-stricken father ignores her. Add chronic obesity to the mix and talk about a walking stereotype of environmental lesbianism.

Rosie O'Donnell's "Queen of Nice" image took a brutal beating in a Manhattan's State Supreme Court Wednesday as a cancer survivor burst into tears while testifying how O'Donnell suggested she was lying about incidents at her now-defunct magazine -- and told the woman that liars get cancer.

Cindy Spengler, the one-time head of marketing at Rosie magazine, said O'Donnell made the remark after a meeting to discuss the magazine's problems, reports the Associated Press.

Spengler said O'Donnell told her that her silence in the meeting was the same as lying.

"You know what happens to people who lie," the witness quoted O'Donnell as saying. "They get sick and they get cancer. If they keep lying, they get it again."

Spengler's testimony before Judge Ira Gammerman (who alone will decide the outcome of the case) was part of the ongoing battle between O'Donnell and Rosie publisher Gruner+Jahr, who are both suing each other for breach of contract.

According to her testimony, Spengler shot back at O'Donnell: "Your mother died of breast cancer. Was she lying?"

"Yes," Spengler quoted the entertainer as replying.

Outside court, O'Donnell, 41, told a large gathering of reporters that she called Spengler the next morning and apologized for the cancer comment.

"I'm sorry I hurt her the way I did," she said. "That was not my intention."

Meanwhile, settlement talks between both sides apparently were held on Tuesday but broke down when the parties could not agree on a confidentiality clause, reports The New York Times. So the clash of the titans resumed in earnest Wednesday.

O'Donnell is expected to take the stand late Thursday afternoon.

If liars get cancer, then wouldn't Howard be a 6 ft 5 inch walking tumor by now?

Oh no, that is really sad. He was a very nice man.
I went to school with his kids (Rosie's older brothers) and he was always very nice to all of us.
I will have to send my condolences to the family. :(
