Pulled this for the Ron Simmons thread but it deserves a standalone.

The 90s at its apex -- thousands of hardcore Stern fans chanting "F Jackie" and "Baba Booey," some moonings, a cameo from Rodney Dangerfield and an amusing outburst from"Melrose" Larry Green. Starts off a bit choppy but smooths out. I was there and this is an accurate depiction of the revelry and chaos that ensued.

Hindsight being 20/20, this was right before Howard ceased relating to the common man and began filming his movie -- and "Miss America" was something of a bill of goods -- but still an amazing memory nonetheless.

Someone needs to post the pictures from his final Letterman appearance.

10 people standing behind 1 single gate. Lol.

    Beetlemania/Howardmania.

ALevy, were you there the night before or during the day?

Many of the people seemed like they were unemployed.

As soon as I heard her voice, I knew it was Uzo but I couldnt remember her name.

I think thats the first time Ive seen Melrose. Wow, what a complete nothing.

Someone pointed out here that he claimed to have signed 25,000 books in a few hours which translated into something like 43 books a minute. And he had a fight with his producer at WNBC and hit him over the head with a phone.

Living in the 90's, I never thought I'd look back on that decade and laugh at what people wore like we do for the 70's and 80's. Those god damn mom jeans ...

I remember getting there sometime before dawn and leaving around 6 p.m. ... it was on a Friday during the holidays, guessing a chunk of the 15,000 there took a three-day weekend.

Here's a Times article about it and a news clip for further reference, came on the heels of the Jay Leno appearance that marked first blood in their feud. With the tepid response to "Private Parts" less than a year-and-a-half later, this timeframe probably marks the peak of Howardmania on a national level. Good times!
