this would be great for vegas. all they have is unlv basketball and they just built a hockey stadium to try to get a nhl team. ( who the fuck in vegas is going to watch hockey?) super bowl in las vegas would be insane!

ALAMEDA, Calif. -- Las Vegas Sands Chairman and CEO Sheldon Adelson wants to build a $1 billion domed stadium on the UNLV campus and is meeting with the owner of the Oakland Raiders, company officials confirmed Thursday.

The Sands Corp. announced Thursday that it was lending its support behind a public-private partnership to build a 65,000-seat, domed stadium on a vacant 42 acres of land recently purchased by UNLV near the corner of Tropicana Avenue and Koval Lane across from McCarran International Airport.

Adelson has scheduled a Friday meeting in Las Vegas with Raiders owner Mark Davis. Sands spokesman Ron Reese didn't elaborate on the nature of their discussions, and the Raiders declined to directly address the meeting.

"In typical Raider fashion," Davis said with a laugh over the phone from the Bay Area, "I can neither confirm nor deny."

UNLV president Len Jessup wrote in a confidential memo leaked earlier Thursday that representatives of the Raiders will be in Las Vegas on Friday to check out potential stadium sites.

"Correspondingly, the Sands leadership team let us know that officials from the Oakland Raiders are scheduled to travel to Las Vegas and tour locations around the valley for a potential new home, and they have asked us to meet them at our 42-acre site on Friday morning to answer questions about that site," Jessup wrote in the memo, which was reported earlier by Nevada political reporter Jon Ralston.

UNLV is looking for a new home for its football program, which has played at 35,500-seat Sam Boyd Stadium some nine miles from campus on the eastern edge of the city since 1971.

According to the Las Vegas Review-Journal, Los Angeles-based Majestic Realty Co. and UNLV are involved in the conceptual plans, and Las Vegas Sands senior vice president of government relations and community development Andy Abboud said the project would be a "public-private" partnership, with the Sands or the Adelson family contributing a large portion of the financing.

"He said the casino company, which operates the Venetian and Palazzo [casinos], as well as casinos in Macau, Singapore and Pennsylvania, could also raise financing for the project," the Review-Journal reported.

Chargers in a joint-stadium project in nearby Carson, the Raiders do not have a lease for a home stadium for the 2016 season. They do have the option to join the Rams in Inglewood should the Chargers decline.

It is expected that the Raiders will play at least the 2016 season in Oakland. They have also been linked to San Diego, should the Chargers go to Los Angeles, for the following years as well as to San Antonio.

The NFL has had a hard line against Las Vegas, and it is hard to see the league signing off on allowing a team to relocate to the gambling capital of the country. The NFL did not respond immediately to a request for comment.

Las Vegas has chased a major league franchise for almost two decades, including MLB and NBA teams. The city appears close to getting an NHL team in under-construction T-Mobile Arena between the New York-New York and Monte Carlo casinos. The ambitious 20,000-seat T-Mobile Arena, set to open in April, was privately funded by casino company MGM, a Las Vegas Sands competitor.

And while Las Vegas might be a relatively small media market at No. 41 nationally, it is bigger than four other current NFL markets in Jacksonville (No. 48), New Orleans (No. 51), Buffalo (No. 52) and Green Bay (No. 68), per last year's Nielsen data.

Support from Adelson, who has consistently ranked as one of the world's richest people, could mean a better fate for the latest proposal.

"Projects like this need a lot of very, very strong leadership, a lot of conviction, a lot of focus, and great resources,'' said Craig Cavileer of Majestic Realty, the project's development partner. "Certainly, Sheldon and his team have proved time and time again that they produce great projects."

It so fucking hypocritical of a league, which produces the largest annual event that sees gambling, to refuse Vegas a franchise over "gambling concerns." Fuck right the fuck off.

Please fucking take them. But I would suggest building a bigger jail and setting up a night court team for home games.

It will never happen. The casinos don't want it as the concession would be no wagering on the NFL period. The NBA had a concession with the Palms casino when the Maloofs owned the Kings. All games involving the Kings were off the board. The NFL would basically insist that no wagering on any NFL games could take place if the Raiders made their home there. The sportsbooks don't make a huge profit but they do bring a huge number of visitors to town because people want to bet on football. Las Vegas is already banking on an NHL team in their new arena and it's pretty much a done deal that the league is going to expand in the next two years and place a team there. The Raiders moving to Las Vegas is a pipe dream but Mark Davis can use it as additional leverage to get Oakland to build a new stadium. The Chargers are moving to LA so the Raiders are pretty much fucked until someone comes up with the balance of the money to build a new stadium.

The NFL doesn't want to be associated with gambling but it's most powerful owners are investors in DraftKings and FanDuel.

They aren't against gambling, they are against someone not giving them a piece of the marbles.

Las Vegas is a terrible media market for a pro team. It may be "bigger" people wise than a few other pro team markets but its made up of so many entertainment and service people that just don't have the time to give a shit. Its so much different than any other US city.

Also, every major sports league has tried to get a franchise in Vegas but having on-site betting on that scale will never be approved by a vast majority of professional sports owners. I guess the NHL is the closest.

Bottom line is this shit isn't happening.

League will never let it happen, at least not under Goodell. I mean, this is the guy that thinks Coldplay is a hip get for Super Bowl halftime.

They'll wait to see how the NHL does there in about two years before even thinking about allowing relocation there.

They'd say they would only allow it if the casinos agreed to remove the league from their sports betting and the state and casinos would both refuse, because whatever perks the NFL would promise them pale in comparison to that juicy gambling revenue.

Most importantly, and they'd never say this out loud, but the league, who is having a hard enough time managing its image problem, would shit their pants at the prospect of unleashing 50-60 urban males with million dollar contracts on Sin City. Casinos may as well set the over/under for dead hookers in that first year at 2.5.

I think most of you are wrong in some respects.
Number one, it's a casino OWNER that is wining and dining the Raiders and willing to put up his own cash.
That kills the casino's are against it theory.
Number two. Gambling is now a small portion of the revenue these hotels earn now. This ain't 1980 anymore.
Most places in the country have gambling near them now and people place sports bets online.
    Number three.
Las Vegas is starving for a pro sports team. Look at Nascar. While most places are REMOVING grandstands, Las Vegas is up to 135,000 plus. Among the highest attendance in the country.
So much for competing forms of entertainment.

Does this mean I think we will end up with the Raiders?
Not just no, but hell no.
I do think eventually we will have a pro football team. But not right now.
Team owners like to USE Vegas as a bargaining chip to get what they want elsewhere.

The entire premise for Las Vegas existing is idiotic.

You will get a WNBA team and like it.

"he had an idea to build a city out of a desert stop-over for GI's on the way to the West Coast. That kid's name was Moe Greene, and the city he invented was Las Vegas."
